Overview

Austin Peay State University's Master of Arts in Military History

Through the College of Graduate Studies, the Department of History and Philosophy at Austin Peay State University offers a Master of Arts in Military History. Offered online, the program includes an optional Certificate in Security Studies.

The Master of Arts in Military History is a 36 semester-hour program. Students can pursue the thesis track, which involves the completion of 30 credit hours of coursework and six hours of the thesis research. Alternatively, they can opt for the non-thesis track through which they complete 36 hours of coursework.

All students take three required courses in military historiography, war and ethics, and research methods. Students may then choose from a vast offering of elective courses ranging from "Warfare in the Classical World" to "The Samurai Tradition in Japanese History."

With a main campus located just ten miles from Fort Campbell military installation and a satellite campus on the post, APSU serves a number of military-affiliated students. The institution has been honored as both a Military Times Best for Vets college and a G.I. Jobs Military Friendly School.

APSU also is a SOCAD university. SOCAD institutions accept each other's courses in particular programs of study. In this way, Army soldiers and their family members can move from one institution to another without losing college credit.

Discounted Tuition Rates for Military-Affiliated Students

Active duty personnel receive low, in-state tuition rates no matter where they live. Since military history graduate courses are offered online, students can complete the program even if they are reassigned to different posts or deployed abroad.

E-rate Tuition Reduction for Online Students

Because coursework is completed online, out-of-state students receive APSU's eRate, a significantly lower tuition rate that is roughly half the normal cost of out-of-state tuition, or about one and a half times in-state tuition. To be eligible for eRate, students must be classified as nonresidents of Tennessee and they must be enrolled exclusively in online courses.

The Certificate in Security Studies

Students can elect to pursue a graduate-level Certificate in Security Studies, completing four courses from the following list:

Cold War I, 1945-1960

Cold War II, 1960-1991

The Battle for God: Jihad, Herem and Other Theologies of War and Peace

The Military in Nontraditional Roles

Special Operations Perspectives

Unconventional Warfare in History

Admission Requirements for the Military History Program

Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree in any field of study. Each student must submit his or her GRE scores, official transcripts from all colleges that he or she attended, a writing sample, a personal statement, three letters of recommendation, and military documents, if applicable.

Faculty of Energetic Researchers

The Department of History is home to a talented and energetic faculty. Professor Kristofer Ray, for example, has published articles and essays on Thomas Jefferson, the Cherokees and the conflict between France and Britain, and Tennessee history. He also serves as the senior editor for Tennessee Historical Quarterly.

Professor Christos Frentzos recently published a book with other scholars entitled "Drawing a Line in the Sea: The Gaza Flotilla Incident and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict." The book emerged from discussions he had while visiting Israel for a counterterrorism fellowship.

APSU -- One of the Fastest Growing Universities in Tennessee

Austin Peay State University is an accredited higher education institution serving approximately 11,000 students. In addition to its main campus in Clarksville, APSU also has three satellite campuses located in Fort Campbell, in Dickson at the Renaissance Center, and in Springfield.
