Master of Arts in English

APSU master's degree programs in literature and in creative writing emphasize teaching and the role of scholarship and creative writing in the development of teachers. Professors and students alike benefit from and enjoy the individual instruction and mentoring our graduate program offers. The ratio of graduate students to graduate faculty members is approximately 2:1, ideal for students to develop their particular talents. Graduate students join faculty members in mentoring and teaching undergraduate students and in conducting and presenting research. Graduate students have gone on to teach in high schools and universities, work as writers and editors, and pursue further studies in Ph.D. programs across the country. Courses are offered in a diverse assortment to include creative writing, theory, technical writing, editing and many literary fields.

Scholarly and Dedicated Faculty Members in the Department of Languages and Literature

The graduate faculty members in the Department of Languages and Literature cover the depth and breadth of preparation and experience to offer students a full and well-balanced curriculum. All graduate faculty members are formally educated and possess degrees from universities throughout the United States. Faculty members are dedicated to student success and are well published scholars that are committed to providing expert instruction within small seminar classes. In the creative writing program, resident faculty members and renowned guest writers work with students in intimate classes with a workshop atmosphere.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have completed their bachelor's degrees with GPAs of 2.9 or higher with bachelor's degrees from accredited colleges or universities. Candidate must submit complete application packages, each containing official transcripts of undergraduate courses completed at all colleges attended, 2 letters of recommendation, a goal statement, a scholarly writing sample (minimum 6 pages), and official GRE scores. Applicants must submit 2 sets of application materials to both the Graduate Admission office as well to the Graduate Coordinator of the English program.
