Master of Music Degree Program

APSU's Master of Music degree program provides graduate education that will produce skilled, knowledgeable, creative, and articulate musicians. The APSU Department of Music offers 2 concentrations in music performance and music education, with a specialization in choral conducting, instrumental conducting, and vocal or instrumental performance. The Department of Music seeks to fulfill its mission by providing training and experience for students preparing for careers in music performance; providing training toward the development of critical thinking in music; providing music training and teaching experience for students seeking licensure in education to help meet the need for competent music teachers in the state and region; providing education resources and musical experiences as part of a comprehensive Liberal Arts education; and providing a rich program of artistic and cultural events in conjunction with the Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts to emphasize the importance of music in the lives of students and the community.

Nationally Renowned Music Faculty Members

Students have the opportunity to work with nationally recognized faculty members in an environment that stimulates creative and professional development. Individualized programs, personalized mentoring by faculty members, and small classes all allow for exceptional learning opportunities. In addition to the normal fall and spring schedules, graduate courses are available in the summer, allowing students to complete the Master of Music degree program in 3 summers and without full-time residence during the academic year.

Department of Music Community Connection

The Austin Peay State University Department of Music is an active and highly visible component of the Clarksville Community. Composed of approximately 180 music majors and 32 full-time and adjunct faculty members, the Department of Music is the largest producer of cultural events in the Clarksville area.

The Music department is housed in a state-of-the-art facility wherein students practice, rehearse, and attend classes in a comfortable environment that is conducive to their creative and intellectual development. Performances take place in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall, a 600 seat concert theatre that is regarded as one of the finest acoustical environments in the Southeast. Recent technology upgrades have included a 25 seat computer lab, "smart" classrooms, a completely digitized listening lab, and a video production facility.

Admission Requirements

An applicant must have a bachelor's degree with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 2.5. Each candidate must submit a complete application package containing official transcripts of undergraduate courses completed at all colleges attended and 3 letters of recommendation. Applicants must also audition on their instruments or with their voices and have short interviews prior to acceptance.
