Master of Science in School Counseling

The Department of Psychology at Austin Peay State University offers a Master of Science in School Counseling degree program. The school counseling concentration is designed to prepare graduates for school counseling positions at elementary, middle/junior high and high school levels. Graduates will meet the current licensing requirements for the Tennessee Board of Education.

Education Specialist (ED.S.) Program

The Education Specialist program is designed to permit students to achieve a degree level higher than the master's. The major is education with concentrations available in administration and supervision, school counseling, elementary education, and secondary education. The psychology department offers 1 concentration, "School Counseling," under the Educational Specialist Programs of Study. The "School Counseling" concentration consists of 32 to 33 hours of course work beyond the master's degree.

The School Counseling Major Curriculum

The "School Counseling" major curriculum requirements include coursework, a 600-hour internship, school observation hours for those who have not taught, and a passing score on the comprehensive examination. The prerequisite for pursuing this degree is 18 hours of psychology or psychology related courses that should include general psychology, abnormal psychology, human development, and statistics. Candidates should plan specified programs with their graduate committees.

Graduate students can each choose either the research project or thesis track. Students who want to pursue doctoral degrees generally follow the thesis track. Students who complete the research project take an additional 3 semester-hour elective, which is frequently a practicum designed to provide students with supervised on-site work experience through which they can apply the competencies they have developed in the program.

E-rate Tuition Reduction for Online Students

Because coursework may include online options out-of-state students receive APSU's eRate, a significantly lower tuition rate that is roughly half the normal cost of out-of-state tuition, or about one and a half times in-state tuition. To be eligible for eRate, students must be classified as nonresidents of Tennessee and they must be enrolled exclusively in online courses.

Admission Requirements for the Master of Science in School Counseling

Applicants must have completed 15 hours of credit in psychology or courses in management, sociology, public administration, or other related fields. Applicants who are admitted typically have GPAs of 3.0 or above. Related work experience may also be applied toward this requirement if approved by the program coordinator.

In addition each student must submit his or her GRE scores, official transcripts from all colleges that he or she attended, 3 letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and military documents, if applicable. All completed applications will be reviewed. Priority admission will be given to applicants whose files are completed and who meet admission requirements prior to March 1st for fall admission.

Faculty of Researchers and Real World Practitioners

The faculty consists of researchers that possess real world experience as counseling practitioners. The graduate program faculty members are particularly committed to educating students who are dedicated to reducing disparities in society based on race, gender, class, and sexual orientation, and other social group membership. The faculty members in the M.S. in School Counseling degree program at APSU infuse program training and standards focusing on respect for diversity and for values different from one's own central values. The valuing of diversity is also consistent with the counseling profession as mandated by the American Counselor Association's Code of Ethics (2005). Students enrolled in the M.S. in School Counseling degree program demonstrate these values for real world application.
