Overview

Master of Science in Biology Degree Program

The Austin Peay State University Master of Science degree program in biology is a research-based program that prepares students to competitively pursue an array of diverse fields such as biotechnology, government service, environmental consulting and teaching. A master's degree in biology creates the opportunity for students to advance in research and contribute gained knowledge through teaching or application in the public service field or private industry. Students use the Master of Science degree as a stepping stone to doctoral or related professional programs.

E-rate Tuition Reduction for Online Students

The Master of Education with a concentration in advanced studies in teaching and learning is available through the Regents Online Degree Program (RODP). Because coursework for this program is completed online, out-of-state students receive APSU's eRate, a significantly lower tuition rate that is roughly half the normal cost of out-of-state tuition, or about one and a half times in-state tuition. To be eligible for eRate, students must be classified as nonresidents of Tennessee and they must be enrolled exclusively in online courses.

Dedicated Faculty in the College of Education

The Department of Biology faculty members are committed to providing instructional and research experiences for students to develop skills of inquire, abstract and logical thinking and critical analysis of natural science phenomena. The foundation course in research methodology, a Spring Seminar series, and research experiences with 3 different options are closely directed by a graduate committee.

Further, the Center of Excellence for Field Biology encompasses scholars from various biological disciplines to conduct research on biotic communities in Tennessee-Kentucky and adjacent eco-regions including experimental ecology, general ecological theory, definition of biodiversity, evolution and systematics, applied biological science, and community outreach through focused and regional environmental education programs. Field-based observations and methodologies are an integral component of these research endeavors.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must have completed their bachelor's degree programs in biology or must have minors in biology from an accredited college or university with GPAs of 2.75 or higher. Students must submit acceptable GRE scores, 3 letters of recommendation, resume listing 3 references, 1 page statement of research interest, and official transcripts from all colleges attended.
