Overview

Elementary Education

The elementary education programs at Bank Street's Graduate School of Education focus on a deep understanding of child development and on helping children become active learners. Bank Street believes that children learn best when they have opportunities to observe the world around them, engage in finding solutions to problems rather than memorizing set responses, and learn with and from others.

The programs in childhood education feature a strong foundation in child development, and an extensive understanding of experiential education in math, the arts, science, reading and language arts, and social studies, and extensive fieldwork / advisement. Advisors work closely with their graduate students to help them integrate theory with practice.

Through a combination of small, learner-centered classes, fieldwork in a range of school setting, and close observation, graduate students learn to think deeply about how best to help children learn. Particular emphasis is placed on helping graduate students understand the links between assessment and instruction, on developing a wide repertoire of teaching strategies, and on learning to address the academic, intellectual, and emotional needs of children

Graduate students may choose from a number of single certification and dual certification programs including childhood general education, early childhood general education, childhood special and general education, bilingual childhood general education, museum education with a focus on childhood, or teaching literacy and childhood general education.

These master's degree programs lead to initial and professional certification in general education at the early childhood or childhood levels. The certifications are valid in New York State and in all states with which New York has reciprocity.
