Overview

The Boston Architectural College has a nearly 125 year tradition of preparing design students for success through practice based education

Founded in 1889, the Boston Architectural College (BAC) is a pioneer and leader in practice based design education. As New England's largest, independent, accredited college of spatial design, the BAC prepares its students to address the design challenges of the 21st century through a concurrent educational model combining academic learning with real world experience. Through their pursuit of graduate degrees in sustainable design, historic preservation, architecture, landscape architecture or interior design, BAC students find themselves well prepared to acknowledge global issues in a rapidly changing, built environment.

Earn a professional graduate degree in architecture, interior design, or landscape architecture at the urban Boston campus

Students may earn the Master of Interior Design (MID), Master of Architecture (MArch) or Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) at the Boston Architectural College's Boston campus. Each degree plan features concurrent learning that combines practice in the field with academic course work, with design studios serving as curricular cornerstones of each program. Interdisciplinary studios and a shared foundation afford students rare opportunities for exposure to all major disciplines. The BAC's campus, in the heart of the historic Back Bay neighborhood, is ideally located to allow students to take advantage of Boston's cultural, historic, and architecturally significant offerings, and to easily integrate the city into their studies. The BAC is fully accredited by NEASC, NAAB and CIDA and provides students the academic credential required to pursue licensure in their field of study.

Pursue graduate degrees and coursework in architecture, historic preservation, or sustainable design from anywhere through distance and online learning

Online, distance, and low-residency education offerings at the BAC are designed to help students realize academic, personal and professional goals. Whether students are aspiring designers, practicing architects, or just have curiosity about design, BAC's array of online courses and low-residency graduate degrees enables them to balance life and work as they pursue design education. The virtual classroom, which has the same rigor and richness of BAC's traditional classrooms, offers anytime, anywhere access to all courses. Online and distance learning is an opportunity to become truly immersed in a learning community, mentored by practicing professionals and industry leaders. The BAC offers low-residency distance graduate degrees in historic preservation and sustainable design (Master of Design Studies) and a NAAB accredited distance Master of Architecture (MArch). Students earn their degrees through a combination of online learning and exciting, weeklong intensives in Boston. Students may also elect to take individual coursework or pursue a certificate in Sustainable Design or Classical Architecture.

: Learn by doing?learn through experience: The BAC is the leader in practice based design education

Experiential learning is the cornerstone of the BAC education. BAC believes its approach is the best way for students to become critical thinkers and accomplished designers. From matriculation to graduation, practice is integrated into the curriculum. Students earn credits in practice by working in supervised professional settings or engaging in design competitions or community based design projects, and their progress is measured by the attainment of professional and interpersonal skills. Because of this unique combination of skills and experiences, BAC students graduate not only with degrees, but with in-depth exposure to the field of design and the ability to become leaders, critical thinkers, and innovators. Many students are also able to make considerable progress toward fulfillment of internship requirements for licensure through completion of the practice requirement.

Faculty and students work within a multidisciplinary environment of collaboration and research

The BAC fosters an educational environment of multidisciplinary collaboration between students and faculty members in the Schools of Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture. The BAC faculty is comprised of educators and professional practitioners, including architects, interior designers, preservationists, sustainability experts, and landscape architects. As full-time design practitioners, faculty members share with students the skills and abilities required for success in their fields, providing real-world perspectives to design studies.
