Overview

Overview

BGSP has been opening doors to psychoanalysis for over 40 years, increasing access to psychoanalytic training, education, and treatment. As the only accredited independent graduate school of psychoanalysis in the country, BGSP enrolls people from all walks of life to explore the human unconscious.

Offering both Master's and Doctoral degrees, BGSP combines academic and experiential learning to unlock potential and foster success. We invite you to discover the BGSP community.

Programs

Clinical Practice and Scholarship

BGSP's Master of Arts program in Psychoanalytic Counseling allows students to pursue the knowledge, experience, and skills needed for licensed clinical practice in mental health counseling. For those not seeking a path to licensed practice, the Master of Arts program in Psychoanalysis provides a foundation in clinical studies.

For anyone seeking full psychoanalytic training, BGSP also offers a Doctor of Psychoanalysis and a Certified Psychoanalyst program where students engage in the educational, clinical, and emotional processes leading to practice as a psychoanalyst.

There is also the option to take clinical work deeper with advanced graduate certificates in psychoanalytic psychotherapy or child and adolescent interventions.

Studies in Psychoanalysis, Society & Culture

BGSP's master's degree in Psychoanalysis, Society, and Culture provides a psychoanalytic foundation for cultural studies and develops skills for work in social service settings. Building on masters' studies, the doctoral degree in Psychoanalysis, Society, and Culture provides advanced scholarship and field opportunities.

Why BGSP

The integration of theoretical learning with emotional learning is the hallmark of the BGSP classroom experience. This innovative learning approach is unique to the school. It is based on the idea that understanding unconscious resistances can be applied, as it is in psychoanalysis when working with patients, to the teaching and learning of psychoanalysis as well. When students are able to connect their emotional experiences with theoretical concepts, then gains have been made towards personal growth, making possible a new level of academic excellence.

The reputation of BGSP's clinical program draws students who are new to the mental health field. The program also attracts practicing clinicians with advanced degrees in social work, psychology, or medicine who are looking to fill a gap in their understanding of human nature and motivation.

Faculty

The faculty at BGSP represent the single greatest resource for fulfilling the mission of the school. BGSP appoints senior faculty members who are both committed teachers and are deeply engaged in the practice and/or research of that which they teach. Faculty members have taught both in psychoanalytic training institutes and in university and graduate settings.

Faculty members also have administrative experience in mental health settings, psychoanalytic institutes, and educational departments within colleges and universities. Research faculty members are available to doctoral students for research consultation. These faculty members have expertise in neuroscience and clinical neurobiology, in statistics, and in traditional social science research methods.

Students

BGSP's students and graduates come from all over the world, with a tremendous diversity of academic backgrounds, life experiences, and cultural heritage. But they all share two things in common: curiosity about the human condition, and the courage to explore it.

The School welcomes applicants with baccalaureate and graduate degrees from all educational backgrounds. The admissions committee considers a broad range of factors when evaluating each application, including previous academic work, but also life experience and motivation to study psychoanalysis. An important qualification for admission is an interest in self-understanding, as well as a readiness to work at the graduate level.
