A History of Innovation in Health Care

The College was founded in 1881 by Dr. Dudley Allen Sargent, but at the time was called the Sargent School of Physical Training. It was originally located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and focused on physical conditioning and health promotion. At Sargent School, students learned training techniques to strengthen and improve the physical capabilities of both the disabled and the healthy. In 1929, after Dr. Sargent's death, and under his son's direction, the college stayed true to its New England roots and became part of Boston University where an emphasis on comprehensive health care continues at the College today.
