Strong Economics and Accounting Master's Programs

The Economics Department at historic Brooklyn College of the City University of New York offers M.A. in Economics and M.S. in Accounting programs as well as an accelerated B.S./M.P.S. program in business information systems. The master's degree programs prepare students for challenging career paths in diverse areas from public policy and business to international finance and banking.

The distinguished 49 faculty members of the Economics Department offer an impressive depth and breadth of expertise that has earned faculty members recognition as scholars, researchers, authors, and speakers. Their areas of expertise range from welfare reform and business ethics to labor markets and macroeconomic policy, from econometrics and research methodology to Chinese politics and trade issues, and from global economies and markets to developing mathematical models for decision making in business.

M.A. in Economics Program

Students in the 33-credit M.A. in Economics program at Brooklyn College have the added advantage of studying economics in a liberal arts environment that empowers students with a diversity of timely skills needed in today's business world.

Under the inspiring tutelage of economics experts, students gain a deep understanding of the traditional scope of economics, as well as the far-reaching impact of health economics and business ethics on the wealth and welfare of states. In addition to the required economics courses, graduate students can further specialize by taking 18 credits in economic analysis or global business and finance.

Economic Analysis Specialization

The economic analysis specialization explores government finance, health economics, international trade, evolution of modern economic thought, and other diverse areas of economics. In the Government Finance course, for example, students study the economic problems and issues in federal, state, and local government finance. They learn to analyze such issues as the impact of taxation and government borrowing.

The Current Problems in Monetary and Fiscal Policy course addresses recent developments and current practices in the monetary and fiscal system and their effects on money stock, money flows, and the liquidity of the economy.

Global Business and Finance Specialization

The global business and finance specialization takes economics to an international level with courses in global finance and management, international economics and finance, bargaining and conflict resolution, global business environment, and international human resource management.

The Analysis of Development Areas course introduces students to the key factors that have an impact on economic growth rates in developed areas. Students in the International Economics and Finance course study the complexities of the foreign exchange market, international financial markets, and how the equilibrium exchange rate is calculated. In addition, students explore capital mobility and the monetary and asset market approach to the balance of payments.

M.S. in Accounting Program

The Economics Department's M.S. in Accounting program involves rigorous course work that gives attention to asset valuation and related problems of enterprise reporting, tax research and planning, comptrollership and managerial accounting, contemporary accounting topics, and accounting requirements of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Upon successful completion of Brooklyn College's M.S. in Accounting program, graduates are qualified to take the CPA exam. The program is registered with the New York State Education Department and meets the requirement of 150 semester hours.

Comprehensive Accounting Curriculum

The core requirements for the 33-credit Master of Science in Accounting degree include 6 accounting courses; 1 required course in economic analysis, finance, and quantitative methods; and 2 elective courses from accounting, business, or economics.

One of the required courses, Advanced Accounting Theory covers asset valuation and related problems of enterprise reporting, and conceptual and technical views of accounting issues for complex business entities. Another course, Financial Statement Analysis, addresses the analysis and interpretation of financial statements primarily by external decision makers. Students learn such skills as fundamental analysis techniques in equity evaluation decisions and credit assessment and debt valuation decisions.

In the International Accounting course, students take an analytical approach in examining the most important international dimensions of financial and managerial accounting. Faculty utilizes case studies to illustrate international accounting standards, transparency in financial reporting, and how accounting and the accounting profession is influenced by different nations and cultures.

Candidates must have extensive preparation in professional accountancy and general business areas to be accepted to Brooklyn College's demanding accountancy program and must pass a comprehensive examination to earn the Master of Science in Accounting.

Accelerated B.S./M.P.S in Business Information Systems

The accelerated B.S./M.P.S. in Business Information Systems program combines business with computing learning to produce computer specialists that also understand their business environment. The curriculum combines undergraduate and graduate study, thus allowing students to complete requirements for their B.S. and M.P.S. degrees in a shorter timeframe.
