Overview

Graduate Programs at Brooklyn College

Since 1935, the Division of Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College has provided an excellent graduate education at reasonable cost. The division offers more than 60 full-time and part-time programs leading to master's degrees and advanced certificates. Its proximity to New York City provides opportunities for internships and field study in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and throughout New York.

Brooklyn College's Department of Television and Radio

The Department of Television and Radio is held in such high regard that the New York media -- the most powerful and influential broadcast market in the world -- actively seeks out the college's graduates. The campus facilities are state-of-the-art and faculty members are leading experts in the artistic, business, and scholarly aspects of media.

Close affiliations with ABC, CNBC, CBS, SONY Music, HBO, and numerous other media organizations provide students with coveted internship opportunities where they gain hands-on experience while building impressive resumes before they graduate.

Alumni of the television and radio program work in creative and technical positions throughout the industry. Upon graduation, they have taken on production, direction, editing, and technical jobs.

Students may choose to pursue a Master of Science in Media Studies or a Master of Fine Arts in Television Production.

M.S. in Media Studies

The Master of Science degree in Media Studies provides students with extensive knowledge about broadcast and electronic communications. It focuses on two areas of study: critical/cultural media studies and broadcast management.

The program emphasizes the connection between theory and practice and helps students acquire the practical and critical skills needed to secure positions in teaching, activism, and media organizations. It includes the following components: media law and regulation, critical and cultural media studies, audience research, and fieldwork.

Flexible in nature, the program allows students -- many of whom are working professionals -- to create courses of study that will help them achieve their professional goals.

M.S. in Media Studies Degree Requirements

To earn a degree, students must complete 30 credits, and 24 of them must be taken in the television and radio department.

Six credits must be taken in required courses while the remaining are electives that enable students to choose a concentration in critical analysis, broadcast management, or programming.

Students must also take a comprehensive examination to determine their understanding of advanced concepts in the field.

M.F.A. in Television Production

The Master of Fine Arts program in television production is a 2-year, full-time program that prepares students for professional careers as writers, producers, directors, and editors.

The production-based curriculum provides laboratory instruction and workplace experience in all aspects of television production including content development; producing, directing, and writing; media aesthetics and criticism; single and multiple camera production; non-linear post-production; and field work. It also introduces students to several program genres including documentary, drama, news, sports, arts and cultural, experimental, and demonstration.

Students learn how to create programs that inform, instruct, and entertain audiences and are based on various social, political, or economic perspectives. They also gain knowledge about HD field cameras, audio operations, and lighting design.

M.F.A. in Television Production Degree Requirements

Students must earn 49 credits, and at least 40 of them must be taken in the television and radio department. Thirty-four of the 49 credits are departmental required courses while the remaining 15 are electives.

Students are also required to complete a creative thesis such as a television program, CD-ROM, or fully-developed Web site. In addition, they must pass a written comprehensive examination during their final semester of study.

Internship and Externship Opportunities

Because the Department of Television and Radio has close affiliations with various media organizations including ABC, CNBC, CBS, SONY Music, and HBO, students have many internship opportunities.

Students in both the M.S. and M.F.A. programs may complete an externship for 3 credits, which includes 200 hours of work at an electronic media organization with on-site and faculty supervision.

In addition, M.F.A. candidates receive paid internships at the Brooklyn College Television Center.

Faculty Members

The Department of Television and Radio's faculty -- many of whom are experts in the artistic, business, and scholarly aspects of media -- is committed to providing outstanding instruction for a diverse student population including international students.

Their research and creative production work (in all areas of electronic media) enhance classroom instruction.

Additionally, they maintain relationships with industry professionals and other scholars. Many of these individuals are invited to be guest lecturers, thus enriching students' educational experience.

Brooklyn College Television Center

Graduate students gain hands-on experience at the Brooklyn College Television Center where they may work as production assistants and crew members on a variety of video productions. They also acquire an understanding of the daily operations in a television production facility.

The center includes a state-of-the-art studio, high-tech post-production facilities, and a wide array of field production equipment.
