Graduate Programs at Brooklyn College

Since 1935, the Division of Graduate Studies at Brooklyn College has provided an excellent graduate education at reasonable cost. The division offers more than 60 full-time and part-time programs leading to master's degrees and advanced certificates. Its proximity to New York City provides opportunities for internships and field study in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and throughout New York.

Nationally Recognized Teacher Training Program

The nationally recognized School of Education at Brooklyn College is one of the largest teacher-training programs in New York City. The college is part of the City University of New York system and is regularly ranked in the top echelon of colleges by such reviewers as "Fiske Guide to Colleges," "U.S. News and World Report" and "The Princeton Review." Brooklyn's School of Education has been rated one of the top 20 in the country. In addition, Saludos Hispanos, an Hispanic employment agency, awarded Brooklyn College an Educators of Distinction Award in recognition of its commitment to higher education success for Hispanics.

The graduate teacher education programs lead to certification in specializations including early childhood education, childhood education, middle childhood education, educational leadership, school counseling, and special education.

The unique curriculum develops students that are highly skilled in content and methodology, adept in literacy skills, and are able to integrate practical technology tools including free and interactive Web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis, and podcasts.

Strong Programs for Urban Teachers

Situated in New York City, the most racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse city in the United States, Brooklyn College's teaching programs are designed in close cooperation with the faculties of the college's liberal arts and sciences departments and in consultation with local schools. As a result, the nationally noted programs teach the knowledge and proficiencies graduate students need to perform effectively as teachers, educators, counselors, and leaders in diverse, urban classrooms and settings.

Faculty of Leaders in Education and Research

The School of Education's faculty represents many of the nation's leading scholars, educators, and designers of innovative school programs from kindergarten to twelfth grade. Their insightful, cutting-edge research has earned grants from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education, the New York State Department of Education, and the National Science Foundation.

Nationally Recognized Program in Early Childhood Education

Recognized by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the M.S.Ed. in Early Childhood Education program helps graduate students understand the process of growth and development of children from infancy through grade 2. The curriculum prepares teachers to connect with and teach young children from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The dynamic curriculum constantly evolves to reflect the latest knowledge about infancy and brain research, curriculum design and play, authentic assessment, and technology.

Programs in Childhood Education

The largest of Brooklyn College's education programs, the M.S.Ed. in Childhood Education program is designed for teachers of grades 1 to 6 and offers specializations in liberal arts, bilingual education, mathematics, or science and environmental education, as well as an extension in gifted education.

Programs in Middle Childhood Education

The middle childhood education program for teachers of grades 5 to 9 leads to a M.S. in Education degree and a New York State Professional Certificate in Middle Childhood Education with a specialization in math or science.

The science specialization provides concentrations in biology, chemistry, earth science, physics, and general science. The math specialization program presents specific options for students who have either an initial certificate in middle childhood education (grades 5 to 9), an initial certificate in childhood education or adolescence education (grades 7 to 12), or no initial certification.

Program in Educational Leadership

The M.S.Ed. in Educational Leadership coursework develops students for leadership careers in pre-K to 12 education in public and private schools. The program's unique curriculum combines small-group, cohort-based colloquiums with coursework in management and instructional leadership. Upon completion of the program, students are simultaneously eligible for the New York State School Building Leader (SBL) and School District Leader (SDL) certificates.

New Program for Leaders in High-need NYC Schools

The School of Education's new Federal Education Leadership Fellows Program gives aspiring school leaders the opportunity to affect change in high-need New York City schools. Program graduates are eligible for partial tuition reimbursement, performance bonuses, and access to mentors and ongoing training once they are employed as assistant principals.

Program in School Counseling

The Brooklyn College school counseling master's program prepares graduate students to work as school counselors with students of diverse races and ethnic backgrounds in public and private K to 12 schools in New York City. Students develop the necessary skills for engaging parents, administrators, teachers, students, and community organizations in the process of making schools more responsive and equitable environments. Internships and supervised field experiences are an integral part of the program.

The Master of Science in Education degree provides students with New York State initial certification as school counselors. Students earn professional certification with the advanced certificate in school counseling. In addition, a 12-credit specialization in bilingual school counseling is offered.

Program in Special Education

The M.S.Ed. in Special Education program teaches students the comprehensive skills and knowledge to work effectively in schools and other urban educational settings that serve individuals with disabilities and their families. In addition, graduate students gain experience in a variety of venues that prepares them to work with special-needs students in culturally diverse urban settings.
