Overview

San Francisco's California Institute of Integral Studies Enjoys a Unique Setting

A short walk from the California Institute's main building, students can find public transportation options that grant them easy access to a vibrant, multicultural city and destinations across the region. The Bay Area has always been where change begins, from human rights, to East-West exchanges, to the latest in the creative arts. There's something for every type of person, Urban souls delve into museums, nightlife, eateries, and entertainment right in SoMa, the South of Market neighborhood, and in San Francisco, Berkeley, Oakland, and the Santa Clara Valley. For those who are nature buffs, Baker Beach, Big Basin Redwoods, Muir Woods, and Marin Headlands are nearby, many available to students on foot, or by bike, bus, cable car, ferry, and BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).

Life at CIIS

CIIS offers a strong community that supports students in their academic pursuits. The institute actively nurtures personal ties through events such as student-faculty retreats and dinners and open mike events in the campus cafe. Numerous organizations provide opportunities for students to collaborate with and meet other students, including the Student Alliance, the Zen Meditation Group, the Urban Permaculturists, People of Color, Queer@CIIS, and International Students and Friends. The rooftop Zen garden, the popular organic cafe, and the library are great places to encounter other students. CIIS staff members help with students' transitions to San Francisco, providing tips and personal guidance on academics, housing, and transportation.

The School of Professional Psychology at CIIS Produces Highly Qualified and Top-Scoring Graduates

CIIS offers a doctoral program in clinical psychology, and several programs that help students to earn counseling Master of Arts degrees.

The doctoral program emphasizes preparation for the professional practice of clinical psychology. It combines rigorous scholarship, supervised clinical experience in practicums and internships, and integration of self-development of trainees with growth in clinical skills. For field experience students can apply to approximately ninety-five community agencies and the institute's clinics, serving a diverse mix of clients. The training program offers specific study in three primary areas of human difference: culture and ethnicity, religion and spirituality, and gender and sexuality. The institute's training philosophy comprises four components: learning in a multicultural context that integrates practicums and classroom work; a relational model of learning and training; significant reflection on students' clinical practice; and a broad range of scholarship, specifically a wider range of topics and methods for clinical dissertations.

CIIS has been offering a master's in counseling psychology for almost three decades. The students in these programs are fully prepared to take the licensing exam offered by the State of California. CIIS consistently ranks among the top universities in the passing rate for the exam offered by the Board of Behavioral Sciences.

CIIS offers five options to become a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC): community mental health, drama therapy, expressive arts therapy, integral counseling psychology, somatic psychology.

Practicum opportunities are available in the institute's award-winning therapy clinics, or in numerous other settings. The academic programs in counseling psychology at CIIS all educate students for both community and private practice. CIIS is committed to preparing highly effective therapists and to providing a rich and transformative experience. Prospective students should review the five programs to see which of the programs is the best match for the students' own goals and interests. Beginning in 2012 the State of California will offer another master's-level counseling license, the Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). CIIS has been active in planning programs to meet these requirements and will be among the first universities in California to offer this option to all of its counseling students.

CIIS Offers a Strong Faculty and Innovative and Rigorous Programs

The faculty at California Institute of Integral Studies includes some of the most cutting-edge, prominent scholars in their fields, acclaimed international authors, and diverse practitioners. The faculty is the fulcrum of the Institute's powerful sense of community and commitment to a fundamental education.

CIIS courses and programs of study blend alternative approaches and contemporary methods so its graduates are able to address psychological health while maintaining rigorous standards with regard to research, academics, and practice.
