Overview

The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at Fresno State

- Offers an EdD in Educational Leadership with 2 options: Pre-K-12 Educational Leadership and Higher Education Educational Leadership (including Community College leadership and administration).

- Offers instruction by professors from California State University, Fresno, members of the Regional Partnership Advisory Board, and other qualified practitioners.

- Schedules coursework in the early evenings and on weekends to accommodate full-time professionals. Most courses use Blackboard to offer a portion of the course in an online mode.

- Includes coursework that may apply to the Professional Administrative Services Credential.

Preparation for Educational Leaders

The doctorate in education prepares administrators to meet the educational challenges of today and the future. New skills developed in the program will enable students to:

- Apply theoretical, practical, methodological and empirical knowledge to practice

- Construct inquiry-based questions related to problems of practice and conduct field-based research

- Serve the needs of an increasingly diverse student population

- Establish sound educational policy and best-practices for educational leadership

- Play a leadership role in educational reform

- Conduct educational assessments and evaluations

Those admitted to the Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at California State University, Fresno join a group (cohort) of 10 to 12 students in each degree option (Higher Education and Pre-K-12). Being a member of such a cohort provides you with opportunities for cooperative learning, skill enhancement, social interaction, and the supportive environment needed to persevere in this intensive doctoral program of study that can be completed in 3 years.

Affiliations and Accreditation

The Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership has been affiliated with the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED) since the inception of the project, and participation has resulted in an enhanced the program that meets the tenets of a professional practice doctorate. In line with the principles of the CPED, the program features embedded fieldwork as the signature pedagogy where students practice the materials presented in class with clients in the field, supervised by the course instructor. In addition, students receive annual feedback about their progress in the course in addition to course grades. Graduation rates for the program are approximately 95% completion (including dissertation) in the 3-year time frame.

The doctoral program is fully accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), NCATE, and CCTC for the Professional Administrative Services Credential.

The Graduate Student Experience

The program develops life-long networks of colleagues. Our graduates feel empowered to lead educational reform even as they are attending the program.

Candidates are supported by the program to present scholarly works at national conferences and encouraged to publish in refereed journals.

A Graduate Writing Students program is available for students who need assistance with scholarly writing, and there is ample support for designing research methods and data analysis.

Student Scholarly Work

Candidates for the Ed.D. are encouraged to submit papers written during classes as well as articles related to their dissertation research to professional organizations for presentation. Faculty members encourage and work with students on their scholarly endeavors. In addition, the doctoral program has a close connection with the Central Valley Educational Research Institute and doctoral students are often provided opportunities to participate in programming, collaborate in district studies, hear guest speakers, and attend symposia and colloquia throughout their participation in the doctoral program.
