M.P.H. -- Health Education Curriculum

The M.P.H. -- Health Education degree program at CSUN follows the cohort format, which allows students to build strong relationships with each other and share learning and professional experiences. Its 15-course curriculum covers the 5 core areas in public health: biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, health policy and management, and social and behavioral science.

Comprehensive Courses

Courses include "Environmental Health," "Biostatistics," "Program Planning and Evaluation," "Advanced Concepts of Health Behavior," and "Curriculum Development in Health Education."

"Cultural Issues in Healthcare;" "Communication in Health Education;" "Seminar: Community Action;" "Current Issues in Health Education;" and "Administration, Supervision, and Consultation in Health Education" are also part of the curriculum. Additional courses include "Seminar: Epidemiology;" "Advanced Biostatics for the Health Sciences;" "Field Training;" "Research Design;" and "Comprehensive Exam."

Field Experiences in Public Health

The 400-hour field experience enables seasoned professionals to strengthen their skills as public health practitioners and allows newcomers to gain early experience in the field.

Due to geographic variations, students generally secure their own field placements; however, they receive ongoing support from the internship supervisor. Field placements can be completed in a variety of settings including local, state, national, and international public health agencies; nonprofit organizations; community-based organizations; and academic, healthcare, and worksite wellness environments.

Students can complete internships at their current places of employment. The internship project, however, must be completely different from their normal duties and completed during non-work hours.

The M.P.H. Exam

The comprehensive exam involves applying and integrating literature, practical experiences, and theoretical frameworks to demonstrate in depth understanding of the field. Students have 2 weeks to complete the exam, whose questions relate to content in specific courses.

Excellent Career Outlook

Public health professionals protect human health through education, promotion of healthy living, and research into disease and injury prevention. Given the complexity of maintaining public health, demand for these professionals continues to increase.
