Online Ph.D. in Education

Capella's University's online Ph.D. in Education helps students to strengthen critical thinking, research, and problem solving skills, developing the advanced expertise they need to teach, lead, or consult in education. K-12 specializations include "K-12 Studies in Education and Curriculum and Instruction;" and state-approved specializations in "Leadership in Educational Administration," and "Special Education Leadership." Higher education specializations include "Instructional Design for Online Learning," "Leadership for Higher Education," "Nursing Education," "Postsecondary and Adult Education," "Professional Studies in Education," and "Training and Performance Improvement."

Ph.D. in Education -- Curriculum and Instruction

Students can advance their knowledge of P--12 curriculum and instruction and conduct research to lead positive change and improve student achievement. This specialization offers advanced theory and practice in research methodology and application, curriculum mapping, instruction and assessment, and collaborative curriculum development. Throughout the program, students will build professional portfolios that demonstrate their doctoral competencies to current and future employers. As part of Capella's Professional Education Unit, this specialization is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). People who choose this specialization are often licensed P--12 teachers, curriculum specialists, or administrators interested in pursuing curriculum director, principal, or superintendent positions, or higher education faculty member positions.

As a doctoral learner, students will attend 3 5-day colloquia at specific stages in the program, in addition to their online courses. These energizing residencies provide students with insights and knowledge that will be valuable during their doctoral studies and beyond.

Online Ed.D. Degree Program

An Ed.D. can prepare students for academic or administrative leadership roles in P-12 or higher education, or education faculty, research, and consulting positions.

Capella's Ed.D. is a professional doctoral degree that features:

- Online course work focused on advanced, practical knowledge in the education profession.

- Applied research that contributes to the solution of a recognized problem in the field of education.

- A program designed to be completed in approximately 3 years, with all courses taken in sequence, allowing you to learn and build professional relationships with the same cohort of students.

Ed.D. - Curriculum and Instruction

The continuing emphasis on educational quality and accountability has created a high demand for educators with specialized skills in curriculum and instruction. This Ed.S. specialization helps students develop and demonstrate the research-based knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to create and implement instructional improvement initiatives and increase student achievement. Designed around national teaching and licensure standards, this specialization is intended for educators and administrators who have completed their master's degrees and want to gain additional knowledge and increase their career options. As part of Capella's Professional Education Unit, this specialization is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). People who choose this specialization are often licensed teachers or administrators interested in pursuing building or district leadership positions in the field of curriculum and instruction, or in continuing their studies at the doctoral level. (Equivalent course work taken as part of the Ed.S. program may count toward a Capella Ph.D. degree.)

Equivalent course work taken as part of Capella's Ed.S. program may be applied to degree requirements for a Capella Ph.D. Students choose between a "Curriculum and Instruction" specialization or a state-approved "Leadership in Educational Administration" specialization.

M.S. in Education Degree Program
