Dr. Harold Abel and Stephen Shank founded Capella University in 1993. Since that time, it has been Capella's mission to extend access to high quality doctoral, master's, bachelor's, and certificate programs for adults who seek to maximize their personal and professional potential. The online, competency-based programs deliver core skills that are immediately applicable and professionally relevant.

Capella University's competency-based curriculum is built with input from employers and alignment to industry association standards. Doctor of Philosophy -- Addiction Psychology

Students can expand their leadership options and advance the field of addiction psychology with Capella's non-clinical doctoral specialization in addiction psychology. Designed around professional education standards in addiction psychology, this specialization helps prepare students for advanced research, faculty member, or leadership positions in the field. Students will build on their current expertise in the addiction field while exploring the latest theories, issues, and trends related to both behaviors with addictive features and substance use. The course work also covers program design, multicultural issues, system approaches, and advanced addiction research. Depending on their professional goals, students can choose additional topics of study, such as management of psychological services, program evaluation, and survey construction and administration. Students will also gain insights from faculty members who bring both extensive professional experience and strong academic credentials in the field of addiction psychology. This is one of very few non-clinical doctoral specializations in addiction psychology available online, which offers addiction professionals more flexibility to combine advanced education pursuits with other professional and personal commitments.

Doctor of Philosophy -- Educational Psychology

Students can deepen their knowledge of educational development and psychological research with this PhD in Educational Psychology specialization that can be tailored to meet their professional needs and research interests. Through their choice of electives, students can focus their studies in such areas as instructional design science, teaching science, or developmental science, or they may choose broader fields of study. People who choose this specialization often plan to pursue careers as professors, educational psychologists, researchers, program administrators, or consultants.

As doctoral learners, students will attend 3 5-day colloquia at specific stages in their programs, in addition to their online courses. These energizing residencies provide students with insights and knowledge that will be valuable during their doctoral studies and beyond.

Doctor of Philosophy -- General Psychology

This online psychology PhD specialization offers students the opportunity to create individualized, academic-track programs designed to meet their professional goals and research interests. Students can choose established areas of psychological study such as health psychology, or design interdisciplinary programs that blend psychology with education, business, or human services courses. People who choose this specialization are often pursuing faculty member or administrative training positions in higher education, business, or the military, or careers in consulting, institutional research, or program evaluation or administration.

Students can improve their career opportunities in the growing field of industrial/organizational psychology through this doctoral specialization designed to deepen students' knowledge of workplace and organizational behavior, and demonstrate their own research-based contributions to the field. Students will gain strong foundations in adult, social, and group psychology, as well as advanced testing, statistical and research methodology. People who choose this specialization often pursue higher education faculty member positions, leadership positions in training or human resources, or consulting or executive coaching positions.

Financial Assistance at Capella

Capella participates in several federal financial aid programs including the Federal Pell Grant Program and Federal Stafford Loan Program. Capella is also eligible to certify Veterans Educational Benefits and can provide information on other non-federal loan programs.

Capella-funded scholarships are also available in select disciplines, such as the Robert C. Ford Human Services Scholarship and the Helene Krivosha Scholarship for education students. There are also external scholarships offered specifically to Capella students, such as the Go the Distance Scholarship.
