Healthcare PhD Programs

Capella University's online PhD specialization in "Health Care Administration" includes advanced research and course work on the health care field and how it integrates with the business, organizational, and public service issues that can affect the health care environment. Students will work with faculty members rich in professional expertise as well as academic strength, and collaborate with professional peers across the country and the world, providing practical experience in interprofessional problem-solving and helping students quickly apply course room lessons to real-life work settings. Other PhD specializations appropriate for health care managers include "Nonprofit Management and Leadership," "Leadership," "Human Resource Management," and "Project Management."

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Care Administration

Students can strengthen their scholarly knowledge and practitioner skills to advance their careers in the fast-growing field of health care administration. This online health care administration specialization includes advanced research and course work in analysis, strategic planning, organizational change, ethics, law, and quality improvement, focused on the health care field. People who choose this specialization are often experienced health care professionals or managers who seek higher education faculty positions or high-level leadership or consulting positions in a variety of private and public health care settings.

As doctoral learners, students will attend 3 5-day colloquia at specific stages in the program, in addition to the online courses. These energizing residencies provide the students with insights and knowledge that will be valuable during their doctoral studies and beyond.

As part of this specialization, students can use their electives to earn concentrations in "Fire Service Administration," "Forensics," "Health Policy and Management," "Homeland Security," "Public Administration," "Nonprofit Management and Leadership," "Public Health," and "Public Policy and Management" for no additional time or money.

The Doctor of Public Health

Students can experience Capella's rich, multidisciplinary approach to public health education and make immediate impacts in their fields through an applied research project. This professional doctorate, developed around national public health curriculum standards, provides one of few opportunities to earn a DrPH online. Students will study and apply advanced public health theories and practices and also develop in-depth understanding of the larger public service environment by collaborating with public administration, public safety, and health care professionals. Courses are designed to be taken in sequence, allowing students to learn and build professional relationships with the same cohort of students.

Review of this program is pending in ND and SC.

The Doctor of Health Administration

Students can position themselves to meet the critical need for leadership skills in the fast-growing field of health care administration. Capella's DHA is designed around the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) Competency Model and is one of few DHA programs in the country. Because it focuses on practical contributions to the health care field, a DHA can be completed in less time than a research-focused PhD. The program includes simulations, group problem-solving, and real-time coaching sessions to strengthen the collaboration and communication skills needed by health care leaders. Students will participate in field experiences instead of a comprehensive examination, giving them the opportunities to apply their newly gained knowledge in professional health care settings. Students will also complete action dissertation projects using participatory research and reflective study to make practical, evidence-based improvements in their organizations or communities.

Review of this program is pending in AZ, KS, KY, ND, SC, TN.
