Overview

Earn a degree online to take your nursing career to the next level

Capella University's degree programs in nursing are designed to prepare experienced nurses to meet the growing need for leadership, education, and research in the nursing profession. For example, the National League for Nursing recognizes that the Nursing Education specialization aligns with the Core Competencies for Nurse Educators, using competencies that are integral to the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) exam. The RN-to-BSN specialization is designed to help students advance their nursing careers by transitioning their nursing diploma to bachelor's-level education. And unlike many DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) programs, Capella's DNP focuses on administrative, organizational, and systems leadership competencies to prepare students for a variety of nursing leadership positions. The DNP curriculum incorporates "The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice" established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

Capella also offers 5 specializations for an MSN: "Nurse Educator," "Nurse Educator Bridge," "Diabetes Nursing," "Gerontology Nursing," and "Nursing Leadership and Administration." These incorporate "The Essentials of Master's Education for Advanced Practice Nursing," established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

of Nursing Practice Program at Capella University

Students can prepare themselves to be leaders in the field of nursing by earning online Doctor in Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees. Because a DNP program focuses on practical contributions to the nursing field, it can be completed more quickly than a research-focused PhD. Unlike many DNP programs, Capella's CCNE-accredited DNP is all online and focuses on administrative, organizational, and systems leadership competencies to prepare students for a variety of nursing leadership positions. Topics covered in this program include leadership and ethics, health care management, policy and advocacy, health care information systems, and health promotion and disease prevention for global populations. Capella's curriculum also incorporates "The Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice" established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

The BSN, MSN, and DNP degree programs at Capella University are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, DC 20036, (202) 887-6791 http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ccne-accreditation.

Doctor of Philosophy in Education -- Nurse Education Specialization

A shortage of nursing faculty members is a key reason U.S. nursing schools must turn away tens of thousands of qualified applicants each year. Capella's doctoral nursing education specialization is designed to prepare master's-level nurses to meet this growing need and to advance the field of nursing through doctoral research. The National League for Nursing recognizes that this PhD specialization in nursing education aligns with the core competencies for nurse educators, using competencies that are integral to the Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) exam. The curriculum includes such topics as advanced nursing theory and concepts, curriculum design and evaluation, teaching strategies, and classroom assessment. People likely to be interested in this specialization include nursing faculty members who want to pursue advanced faculty or leadership positions and nurses currently working in health care delivery who want to share their knowledge of nursing.

As doctoral learners, students will attend 3 5-day colloquia at specific stages in the program, in addition to online courses. These energizing residencies provide students with insights and knowledge that will be valuable during their doctoral studies and beyond.
