M.A. in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts With the Largest University-Owned Public Broadcaster in the Nation

The School of Broadcast and Cinematic Arts (BCA) at Central Michigan University (CMU) offers a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts degree program. CMU runs America's largest university-owned broadcast network. The school operates 2 television stations, several cable television channels, and the award-winning CMU radio. CMU public television and radio are staffed by professional personnel, as well as by students seeking practical backgrounds in broadcasting.

The M.A. in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts With 4 Specializations

Students enrolled in the BCA graduate program at Central Michigan University may choose to pursue thesis or independent research project options. Both options require at least 30 hours of graduate-level coursework including core courses in audio production, video production, survey of the mass media, critiquing mass media, and electronic media law.

Students choose from 3 specializations: electronic media management, though which students explore the social and legal issues that affect the development, operation, and business strategies of electronic media; electronic media production, through which students explore audio and video creating and editing; and electronic media studies, through which students study mass communication and film theory and criticism covering film history and the methods of criticism.

A Growing Field

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment in broadcasting to increase faster than the national average and to have higher than average entry wages. The BCA program is designed for students looking to thrive in varied industries such as television, communications, public relations, or radio.

To support networking and professional development opportunities, students are encouraged to join the campus chapters of the National Broadcast Society, Women in Radio and Television, and the Education Broadcast Network.

State of the Art Facilities at CMU

Production venues at CMU include 2 state of the art television studios as well as well-appointed radio facilities. Moore Hall Television, CMU's 24-hour cable television station (MHTV), gives students opportunities to join in all phases of the creative process, from planning and writing to editing and recording. Moore Media Digital Design is CMU's multimedia laboratory, giving hands on experience in web page development, streaming, media presentation, and convergence.

Moore Media Records (MMR), CMU's student-run recording studio offers students the opportunity to learn about numerous facets of the music industry, such as distribution, editing, promotions, and recording. MMR stays current with the latest acoustic software and developments such as Digidesign Pro Tools HD for recording and post production.

Experienced Faculty Members in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts

Distinguished faculty members at CMU include Professor Will Anderson. Dr. Anderson is a 2 time winner of the prestigious National Audio Theater Scriptwriting Award and once served as artist-in-residence for the Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. An expert in promotional and persuasive media campaign development, mediated text creation and analysis, and mediated image management. Professor Anderson specializes in script writing and audio production.

A member of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame, Professor Peter B. Orlick founded the BCA program at CMU and still serves as program director. Author of classic communications books such as "Electronic Media Criticism," "Broadcast/Broadband Copywriting," and "Career Perspectives in Electronic Media," Dr. Orlick has served multiple terms on the Broadcast Education Association's (BEA) board of directors and chair of the BEA scholarship competition since 1992. Professor Orlick's research interests include electronic media criticism, media advertising and copywriting, mass media history, and broadcast education.

Professor Patty Williamson worked for a decade in commercial radio as a program director, copywriter, and public service director before coming to CMU. Faculty adviser to the campus branch of American Women in Radio and Television, Dr. Williamson researches the public perception of film and television ratings, the motivations of movie-going audiences, and film criticism.

Admissions and Financial Aid in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts at CMU

Applicants should have GPAs of 2.7 or better in broadcasting, film studies, radio, or related fields such as communications. Applicants wishing to specialize in electronic media must submit demonstrations of their production work as well as resumes of their production skills and related coursework. Students pursuing the film criticism specialty do not need media-related degrees so long as they have a strong background in courses such as mass communications, arts, and literature.

Graduate assistantships in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts are available annually. Graduate assistants help teach in audio and television production courses, electronic journalism, and film survey courses, and help direct co-curricular productions.

Central Michigan University is located in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, a town of about 20,000, situated about 150 miles northwest of Detroit. One of the 100 largest schools in America, CMU enjoys a 480-acre campus boasting an eclectic mix of Victorian and modern buildings. CMU has numerous annual events and traditions such as an annual cardboard boat race during homecoming and Native American Month which celebrates the local Saginaw Chippewa Tribe.
