Duke University - Distributed Master of Engineering Management Program (d-MEMP) - Overview

Distributed Master of Engineering Management Allows Working Professionals to Up-skill in Business, Engineering, and Law

Duke University's Distributed Master of Engineering Management Program (d-MEMP) is an innovative low-residency distance option for early-career working professionals. d-MEMP provides students with the opportunity to pursue an engineering management degree in a challenging yet personalized environment while maintaining their professional career track. Its unique learning method integrates the flexibility of class scheduling and remote classroom participation with cohort-centric residencies promoting immersion in campus life, seminars, and workshops.

d-MEMP offers the same core curriculum as our campus program: marketing, finance, intellectual property and business law, and management. Students focus on building expertise in commercialization, finance, or operations management, with additional technical electives. Residencies allow each distance cohort to connect with each other, the program's faculty, and our campus students, while taking part in our residency seminars and workshops.

d-MEMP is distinctive among distance programs in engineering management programs through its integration of business, law, and engineering; the flexibility of its curriculum, which can be completed in as little as two years; and its one-week residencies, which allow students to develop a sense of community with their classmates and take part in the Duke experience, including seminars and workshops covering a diverse range of business topics that supplement the program's course offerings. The curriculum, offered with the support of Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and the Duke Law School, requires four core business courses and four technical electives, including electives that allow students to focus on Commercialization, Finance, or Operations.

Core Business Courses Are Supplemented by Concentrations in Operations, Finance, or Commercialization

MEM's core business courses consist of marketing, finance, management, and intellectual property/business law. Technical elective offerings provide additional expertise in each student's area of interest. Two electives are selected from one of three Areas of Concentration: Operations, Finance, or Commercialization. Concentration tracking allows students to demonstrate a command of knowledge in one specialty.

Duke's Distance Engineering Management Program Offers Flexibility and Support for Working Professionals

d-MEMP is designed for highly-motivated individuals able to work independently as well as engage in learning opportunities that integrate with fellow distance students, residential MEM students, and faculty. d-MEMP requires personal organization and focus to perform at the utmost excellence in both work and educational arenas simultaneously.

Our student population hails from a broad range of disciplines and have between two to five years experience in industries that span construction management, health and medicine, information technology, consulting, finance, and more. Cohort groups for d-MEMP are intimate, offering a unique learning core with personalized attention. The network of working professionals in each class promotes personal and professional relationships that extend beyond the graduate program.

Our staff is committed to supporting d-MEMP students throughout their course of study. We work closely with each student to provide guidance in meeting challenges inherent in balancing the demands of graduate work with career and family responsibilities. We encourage all students to discuss personal programming challenges so that we may provide options to ensure a successful and meaningful experience.
