A Top Graduate Program in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis

Emory University offers a Ph.D. program in Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis (IMP) through its highly-regarded Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences (GDBBS). One of the fastest growing medical centers in the country, Emory University has also been ranked by the "Chronicle of Higher Education" as among the top 10 institutes in the country for immunology research.

Faculty members come from both basic science and clinical departments in the School of Medicine, the Yerkes National Primate Research Center, the Emory Vaccine Center, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Faculty member research is generously funded through prominent institutions, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Students receive competitive financial support and interdisciplinary training in cellular and molecular immunology, as well as the role of the immune system in the pathogenesis of infectious disease. The program is designed not only for students interested in academic careers in teaching and research, but also for those interested in careers in related aspects of medicine and industry.

Doctoral Coursework and Research

Doctoral students in the Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis program typically complete their degrees in approximately 5 years.

During their first year of study graduate students take general courses in immunology, cell biology, and biochemistry. They also complete three 10-week laboratory rotations in order to acquaint themselves with potential advisors and research subjects for their dissertations.

By their second year, students actively pursue their dissertation research while taking courses on current topics in immunology and electives such as statistics for experimental biology. Students also each complete a two-day Teaching Assistant Training and Teaching Opportunity Program (TATTO). By the end of the year, students complete their qualifying exams.

During their remaining years in the program students participate in advanced graduate seminars and advanced graduate research courses as they complete their dissertation proposals, research, theses, and oral examinations.

Outstanding Faculty and Research Opportunities

The IMP program provides students with unique opportunities to study all aspects of pathogenesis using a spectrum of cutting edge molecular and cellular techniques. Participating faculty members have a broad range of research interests, from basic immunology to the molecular biology of viral and bacterial pathogens.

Graduate students in the Immunology and Molecular Pathogenesis program have unique training opportunities through the Center of Excellence for Influenza Research and Surveillance and the Emory Vaccine Center. Emory is unique in giving students the option to do dissertation work at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The IMP faculty is highly accomplished. Professor Richard Cumming has published over 230 peer-reviewed articles in the field of glycosciences. His research has been funded by the NIH since the early 1980s. In 2006, he came to Emory to found the Glycomics Center. He has received many awards, including the Society for Glycobiology's Karl Meyer Award for outstanding accomplishments.

Professor Max Cooper helped establish the dual nature of the adaptive immune system and discovered isotype switching by IgM-producing B cells. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Rafi Ahmed is a world-renowned immunologist whose work during the past decade has been highly influential in shaping our current understanding of memory T cell differentiation and anti-viral T and B cell immunity. He is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

Competitive Financial Support

Students in the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences at Emory receive tuition scholarships, health insurance, and stipends. They enjoy the low cost of living in suburban Atlanta, Georgia.

The stipend for the 2014-15 academic year is $28,500. In addition, several competitive fellowships are offered to outstanding applicants each year. These fellowships provide students with supplements to their stipends that range from $2,500 to $5,000 per year for 5 years, depending on the award.

Emory University is located in a beautiful, wooded area of northeast Atlanta, Georgia, just 4 miles from downtown. The area serves as a hub of medical research, encompassing both the CDC and the American Cancer Society.

Midtown Atlanta is home to museums, galleries, and cultural activities that students enjoy. Atlanta's temperate climate affords students many opportunities for outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, and camping.
