Overview

Felician College Offers Programs in Education to a Community of Learners at Locations in New Jersey Near New York City

Felician College operates two campuses in New Jersey, one in Lodi and the other in Rutherford. The Lodi campus is situated along the bank of the Saddle River. The Rutherford campus stands in the center of a historic town. Within each of these settings, the Felician students just minutes from the arts, culture, and excitement of New York City. The areas around these New Jersey campuses offer an array of recreational, leisure, and dining activities for students.

The College has a strong tradition of providing both undergraduate and graduate programs in education. The Division of Teacher Education welcomes all eligible students who want to join a community of learners on campuses where the philosophy is to put students first. Through Felician's programs in education, students receive knowledge, individualized guidance, and opportunities to build professional confidence in an atmosphere of spirituality.

The master's programs supply a variety of options for students committed to the education profession. The college's programs in education also feature a Teacher Education Certificate designed for those who already have a bachelor's degree and wish to earn teacher certification. Candidates for teacher certification select from five content areas: social sciences, English, math, science, and art. The degree and certificate programs in education at Felician College also assist currently certified teachers who wish to advance their careers with additional endorsements.

Felician's Master of Arts in Education, Master of Arts in Education: Leadership, and Master of Arts in Education: School Nursing and Health Education

The Master of Arts in Education at Felician College enables graduates to utilize effective instruction and a variety of teaching models for successful classroom practice. It can be taken with or without prior teacher certification to meet the needs of students who are looking to enter the teaching profession or those who are currently certified to teach and are looking to advance their career. The Master of Arts in Education program offers the following tracks/endorsements: elementary education (K-5) or elementary education (K-5) and teacher of students with disabilities (K-12). For those seeking certification in elementary education (K-5), 37 credits are required for completion of the program. For teachers who already hold certification, this track requires the successful completion of 33 credits. For those seeking certification in elementary education (K-5) and teacher of students with disabilities (K-12), 46 credits are required for completion of the program. For teachers who already hold certification, 42 credits are required.

Certified, experienced teachers whose career goals include leadership positions in public or private schools can enroll in the Master of Arts in Education: Leadership program. The program offers endorsement opportunities as a principal and/or a supervisor. Throughout the program, students gain fundamental, theoretical knowledge and skills paired with practical, hands-on experience. The MA in Education: Leadership program focuses on developing ethical and caring leaders who base their reflective practice on their professional knowledge of curriculum and instruction as they approach administrative responsibilities in innovative ways. Students attending classes at the Rutherford campus on a part-time basis can complete the degree program in two years. With only the supervision endorsement, the program is 33 credits. Students who earn both the principal and supervision endorsements complete a 36-credit program that also entails a 250-hour internship spanning two semesters. If the student's school is an accredited institution, the internship can be completed there, pending approval. Other endorsement programs are available for interested students already holding master's degrees in education.

Felician College also offers the Master of Arts in Education: School Nursing and Health Education Program. This program prepares registered nurses with bachelor's degrees to provide health education and nursing services in K-12 schools. The State of New Jersey Department of Education has approved this 37-credit program that can be completed in two or four semesters. After completing the program successfully, graduates are eligible to apply for the New Jersey School Nurse Certificate and/or the Teacher of Health Education Certificate. Students must participate in a practicum that is coordinated with their school district's academic calendar.

Faculty Mentoring and Research Facilities Produce Knowledge Essential to Success in Classroom and Supervisory Positions

Students working toward their degrees in education interact cooperatively with fellow students and faculty members to reach their highest potential. Graduate programs at Felician include personalized mentoring by faculty members who are dedicated to giving students the knowledge required to succeed in the classroom, administrative settings, and supervisory positions. In addition to college faculty members, students in the Division of Education may interact with the faculty, staff, and children of private and public area schools. Students of the college also are involved with community outreach programs that share real-world experiences.

The required course work for the master's degrees include both introduction to research classes and research methods in education courses. Specific tracks within the master's programs address the relevant issues for today's educators, including recent trends, practices, research, and legislation. These research-oriented classes and tracks prepare graduate students for innovation in instruction, leadership, and administration. Support for course work is available through the college's research facilities.

From libraries to technology centers, modern facilities on the college campuses assist education students in securing advanced degrees and credentials. Research facilities extend beyond the campus to the actual school building, as degree candidates experience field applications of learning.
