Graduate Programs in Human-Centered Design at Florida Institute of Technology

Florida Institute of Technology offers Master of Science and Ph.D. degree programs in human-centered design that train students to solve complex problems concerning technology, organizations, and people.

They learn the principles and methods and gain the skills and experience to create the devices, environments, and tools that support user-centered, sustainable products; advance efficiencies; and improve people's quality of life.

At the core of these programs is the university's 55 years of expertise in engineering, management, science, and technology. Expert and attentive faculty members; customized curricula; high-tech facilities; and an emphasis on cross-disciplinary study and research are also important program features.

Master of Science in Human-Centered Design at Florida Institute of Technology

The M.S. degree program in Human-Centered Design consists of 33 credit hours of coursework including a thesis or non-thesis option.

The non-thesis option has 30 credit hours of core and elective courses and 3 credit hours of project work as well as a final examination. The project's goal is to demonstrate students' ability to solve human-centered design problems; design, prototype, and evaluate solutions; and apply verbal and written communication skills.

The thesis option includes 27 credit hours of core and elective courses and a minimum of 6 credit hours of thesis work. The thesis project, which can be analytical, applied, experimental, or theoretical, enables students to explore the literature; design, prototype, and evaluate solutions; and competently present their ideas verbally and in writing.

M.S. in Human-Centered Design Research Areas

Florida Institute of Technology provides extensive opportunities for students to explore theories in human-centered design (HCD) and tackle problems encountered in their professions.

Research areas include advanced interaction media, cognitive engineering, complexity analysis for HCD, creativity and design thinking, and functional analysis. Human-centered organization design and management, industrial design, life critical systems, modeling and simulation, and usability engineering are also research areas.

Doctor of Philosophy in Human-Centered Design

The Ph.D. in Human-Centered Design degree program includes a minimum of 42 to 48 credit hours of coursework beyond the master's degree. This consists of 18 to 24 credit hours of courses and 24 credit hours of doctoral research and dissertation work.

Upon acceptance into the program, students each complete an approved program plan. They also complete comprehensive examinations, submit dissertation proposals, and defend their proposals to the dissertation committee. Additionally, they publish in at least 2 refereed journals prior to defending their dissertations.

Dr. Guy A. Boy, a professor and the director of the Human-Centered Design Institute, is one of the program's distinguished faculty members. He has written 4 books and more than 200 scientific and technical papers in the areas of cognitive engineering, human-centered automation and design, operational documentation and knowledge management, safety-critical systems, and usability.

Dr. Ondrej Doule, a professor of Human-Centered Design and Aerospace Engineering, focuses his research on architecture, design methods, and theory of design. He is also founder, designer, and co-coordinator of Self-Deployable Habitat for Extreme Environments, an FP7-funded architecture demonstrator for earth and space applications.
