Overview

Two Graduate Level Tracks in Occupational Therapy

The Florida International University occupational therapy (OT) program, housed within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, offers 2 graduate level tracks -- one that prepares students to become entry level occupational therapists, and one that prepares occupational therapists certified at the bachelor's level to earn master's degrees.

The FIU program emphasizes evidence-based practice and cultural competency -- supporting the needs of a diverse student population and providing opportunities for minority and non-traditional students.

Professional Master of Science program

The Professional Master of Science program in occupational therapy prepares students with bachelor degrees in any major to become entry-level occupational therapists. Students attend this program on a full-time basis for 7 semesters including summers. Classes begin each year in the fall term. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE).

Graduates of the program are qualified to sit for the national certification examination for occupational therapists administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Candidates who successfully complete this exam earn the designation of Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR).

Post-Professional Master of Science

Florida International also offers an online Post-Professional Master of Science (MS) in Occupational Therapy for occupational therapists who have been NBCOT certified at the baccalaureate level.

The program consists of 30 credits including the master's project. All courses are taught completely online, with no on-campus requirements. FIU was the first institution to offer a fully online MS program.

Coursework focuses on both evidence-based practice and research which students apply toward their culminating master's projects.

Departmental Emphasis on Research

The FIU Occupational Therapy department places an emphasis on research. Exemplifying this is Professor Dennis McCarthy, who directs the South Florida Community Mobility Research Lab.

Professor Kinsuk Maitra, department chair, has contributed a number of journal articles on various topics, such as OT outcomes for patients with multiple sclerosis, and the association between language and fine motor impairment in school age children.

Professor Amy Paul-Ward is interested in community engagement and has written about social and occupational justice barriers in the transition from foster care to independent adulthood.

Professor Pey-Shan Wen focuses on rehabilitation outcome measurements specifically on functional cognition and participation of individuals with traumatic brain injury. She is also interested in safe driving behavior of older people and their participation in the society.

State-of-the-Art Resources

The College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers its students a 114,929 square foot state-of-the art simulation teaching and research facility, known as the STAR Center. This resource, which includes a simulation lab and a rehabilitation lab, fosters interdisciplinary instruction and collaboration among the college's several disciplines.

The simulation center features 8 simulation patient rooms, a 15-bed critical care unit, patient simulators, and control rooms for computerized patient care scenarios. The rehabilitation center hosts the hallmark Human Performance Lab, containing sophisticated teaching and research tools and equipment that concentrate on human movement and injury prevention.

Other labs in the rehabilitation center focus on the areas of activities of daily living, neuromusculoskeletal learning, rehabilitation, gait analysis, pediatrics, audiology, speech and language, and therapeutic activities.

A Large University That Fosters Diversity

Florida International University is a member institution of the State University System of Florida, and serves more than 47,000 students. FIU is the largest university in South Florida and one of the 25 largest public universities in the nation. The university welcomes diversity, as seen by its ethnic mix -- with a majority of Hispanic students and many other minorities.

The main campus sits on 344-acres on the western edge of Miami. The campus features a performing arts center, a recreation center, an expanded university center, and a 4,500 seat arena and a football stadium.
