Overview

Fordham University's Internationally-Acclaimed Master's Degree in International Political Economy and Development

Fordham University's International Political Economy and Development (IPED) Master of Arts program is internationally acclaimed for academic excellence. The interdisciplinary program attracts top students from around the country and the world who are eager to understand and grapple with the political, economic, and social challenges of the current economic world order. A large percentage of students come from Europe, Latin America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe.

The master's graduate curriculum gives students a thorough grounding in international economic development, economic theory, emerging markets, governments, politics, political science, and the role of non-profit organizations in the international community.

Armed with a prestigious Master of Arts degree in International Political Economy and Development, Fordham graduate students are ready to pursue international careers as financial analysts or management consultants in the private sector, economists and policy analysts in the public sector, or project managers in the non-profit sector for relief and development agencies or human rights organizations.

Expert Scholars in Economic Development, Economic Theory, Emerging Markets, Government, Non-Profits, and Politics

In small classes that foster robust student-teacher conversations, students learn from expert scholars and visiting professionals from international arenas such as the United Nations and the U.S. State Department.

IPED faculty members are deeply involved in leading-edge research on international issues concerning government, economic development, economic theory, emerging markets, political science, politics, and government. They regularly write, publish, and present their research at national and international conferences.

Faculty Research Focuses on Major International Issues

Faculty research topics on economics and economic development have included health evaluations in developing countries, financial consulting, economic rights of women, macroeconomics, international trade, international finance, and poverty and income distribution in Latin America and Asia. Other definitive faculty research focuses on such issues as caring for the disabled in the developing world and agriculture and sustainable development.

Economics research topics have included the political economy of the Middle East and North Africa, post-conflict peace building, and the political economy of direct foreign investment. Sociology research covers areas of interest like social movements and transnational politics, the sociology of knowledge and culture, and urban demography.

Award-Winning Graduates of Fordham University's IPED Program

Many IPED graduates win distinguished awards such as Fulbright scholarships, Soros Foundation scholarships, and US Presidential Management fellowships. The success of IPED graduates can be attributed to IPED's unique and innovative interdisciplinary approach to analyzing contemporary global economic relations and international development issues in the heart of the international metropolis of New York City.

The International Political Economy and Development master's program successfully recruits a talented and diverse student body by offered specialized fellowships in addition to regular fellowships. For example, Ricci Fellowships attract graduate students who are actively involved in international affairs, primarily from the U.N. diplomatic community. Global Markets Fellowships, Arrupe Fellowships, and Public Service Assistantships attract students interested in, respectively, international commercial and financial markets, careers in non-profit international relief organizations, and U.S. international public policies and programs.

Through Fordham University's participation in the US Peace Corps Fellow/USA Program, the IPED program also draws highly-seasoned and dedicated individuals committed to many of the ideals of President John F. Kennedy.

IPED Program Launches and Enhances Successful International Careers

Armed with their IPED master's degree, graduates go on to enjoy distinguished careers in business, government, and the non-profit sector. Some become analysts in the financial services industry or analysts and managers in the public sector at agencies such as the US International Trade Administration and the United Nations Development Programme. Others distinguish themselves in the non-profit sector as project managers for such organizations as Catholic Relief Services and Freedom House.

IPED Offers Cross-Disciplinary Dual Degrees

The MA program provides important practical training through its internship program in the U.S. and abroad for those students without relevant professional experience.

The International Political Economy and Development program offers dual master's degree programs in IPED and economics or a dual IPED/JD degree. Course work in the IPED program can be used to fulfill some of the requirements for Fordham's PhD degree in economics or sociology.

An Independent University in the Jesuit Tradition

Fordham University is an independent university in the Jesuit tradition with campuses in the Bronx, Manhattan's Lincoln Center, West Harrison in Westchester County, and the Louis Calder Center Biological Field Station in Armonk, NY. Fordham University's distinguished IPED program attracts people from different cultures, faiths, and ideologies who share a desire for a career in an international venue and an equally strong desire to contribute to the common good.
