Overview

Fordham University's M.A. Degree in Latin American and Latino Studies Features Cross-Disciplinary Curriculum

Fordham University's unique Master of Arts degree in Latin American and Latino Studies is the only such degree offered at a New York City university. Fordham's Latin American and Latino Studies Institute administers the innovative program, which studies the fastest growing demographic group in the U.S.

To enhance its core curriculum, the Latin American and Latino Studies Institute draws on the talented faculty-scholars and courses of many other Fordham departments to create a full-bodied interdisciplinary curriculum to help students better understand the complexities of Latin American countries, and the history and culture of Latinos in the United States. Cooperating Fordham departments include history, Spanish, political science, economics, sociology, anthropology, theology, African and African American studies, art history, and communication.

Graduate students utilize their M.A. degree to go on to advanced graduate work in a specific discipline, to gain careers in nongovernmental organizations in the United States and abroad, or to advance their careers in business, marketing, consulting, or teaching.

High-Caliber Faculty of Internationally Recognized Scholars

The distinguished graduate faculty is comprised of highly accomplished scholars who are active researchers. They are internationally known for their contributions to Puerto Rican studies, Latin American studies, and NYC and Latino cultural studies. They regularly publish their research and are stimulating speakers at regional, national, and international conferences.

Passionate about their work, faculty members conduct graduate seminars and introduce students to the field's cutting-edge research and its most influential thinkers.

The facilities for researching Latin American studies, Puerto Rican studies, and Latino cultural studies are extensive. Fordham's Walsh Library has an excellent collection of Latin American studies and Latino books and journals. Additionally, New York City is home to the New York Public Library, one of the finest research libraries in the world.

Fordham University Pioneers Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs

Since the 1990's, Fordham University has pioneered interdisciplinary graduate programs to better prepare graduates for careers in an increasingly multicultural and multinational society.

The innovative master's program on Latino and Latin American studies joins the ranks of Fordham's other successful, interdisciplinary graduate programs including Humanities and Sciences, Urban Studies, Elections and Campaign Management, Medieval Studies, International Political Economy and Development, and Ethics and Society.

Robust Latin American and Latino Studies Curriculum

Core courses include subjects such as Latino New York, Aztec art, contemporary Cuban cultural history, Latino journalism, and a research seminar that focuses on the writing and presentation of students' thesis papers.

Interdisciplinary course choices include "Hispanic Policy Issues," an examination of critical policy issues currently affecting Hispanics; "Golden Age Spain and Its American Empire"; and "Development and Cultural Change," a study of the impact on both local cultures and the intricate system of the global economy with a special emphasis on the cultures of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Additional courses include: U.S. Latino Theology, Economic Development Policy, Caribbean Diasporas, London and New York, Latin American History, and Brazil and the World.

International Studies in an International City

Graduate students enjoy the double benefits of the robust, cross-disciplinary curriculum of an internationally acclaimed university and the invigorating experiences of a truly international city comprised of many proud cultures from around the world.

Faculty members enrich coursework with trips to museum exhibitions, art galleries, theaters, orchestras, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and international film festivals.

With two of its four campuses in the Bronx and Manhattan, Fordham University is situated in the heart of one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world. New York City has large populations of residents from Latin America and the Caribbean, which makes it an ideal place for pursing cultural studies, specifically Latin American studies, Latino studies, and Puerto Rican studies.
