The Graduate Theological Union -- Where Religion Meets the World

Graduate Theological Union (GTU) is a consortium of nine theological schools and seminaries dedicated to building bridges among faith traditions by educating students for teaching, research, ministry, and service. Students come from around the globe, drawn by a community that is passionate about understanding different perspectives and finding common ground from which to build solutions to pressing religious, political, economic, and social issues.

GTU students benefit from the largest theological faculty in the United States, hundreds of course offerings across the consortium, an excellent theological library, a collaborative relationship with the University of California, Berkeley, and a culturally and religiously diverse location in the San Francisco Bay Area. GTU offers such fantastic resources and opportunities such as the Centers for Jewish and Islamic Studies; programs on Asian theologies, religions, and cultures; programs on black church studies; programs on women's studies in religion; and nine member schools, plus several affiliate programs -- including the Institute of Buddhist Studies. All of these and more offer students great opportunities for unique interfaith educations.

Focused PhD, ThD, MA Programs in Dialogue Across Disciplines and Religions

The GTU PhD and ThD program introduces students to the life and practice of intellectually and methodologically rigorous scholarship to prepare them for a diversity of occupations and vocations. Faculty members work with students in close collegial relationships -- often teaching courses together -- across a spectrum of study areas that allows for innovative interdisciplinary study. For example, the history area includes two distinct tracks, one in the history of Christianity (with possible fields ranging from ancient, medieval, Reformation, and American religious history) and one in Jewish history and culture. The Christian Spirituality area incorporates knowledge from across disciplines such as Biblical studies and history, always in dialogue with another religion. "Cultural and Historical Studies of Religions" provides critical understandings of interreligious, multicultural, and contextual religious experience, and the involved faculty members have expertise in Buddhist Studies, Islamic Studies, and East Asian Religions, as well as anthropology, ritual studies, gender theory, pluralism, and interfaith dialogue.

Additional areas of study include art and religion, ethics and social theory, liturgical studies, interdisciplinary studies, biblical studies, and systematic and philosophical theology. These disciplines incorporate current approaches, including aesthetics, historical, narrative, feminist, postcolonial, queer theory, constructive theology, comparative theology, cultural and literary studies, ecology, and science and theology.

The GTU's partnership with the University of California, Berkeley expands the community's scholarly resources.

The Master of Arts (MA) program is designed to help students acquire a focused knowledge in a chosen area of concentration in the context of the broader disciplines of theological or religious studies. Students in the program develop the ability to conduct research at the graduate level, develop a critical perspective on one or more religious traditions, and gain the credentials for the pursuit of further academic study. Across the full range of offerings students explore current approaches to theological questions while honoring foundational frameworks in scholarship. In addition to the areas of study across the disciplines of theology, specialized concentrations are also available in biblical languages, Buddhist studies, Islamic studies, Jewish studies, Orthodox Christian studies, and interreligious studies.

Preparing for a Profession

As an ecumenical community that fosters a deep understanding of religious traditions within a broader interfaith and intercultural context, the GTU cultivates the tools needed for leadership in a pluralistic and divided world. GTU Alumni teach at a full range of academic institutions, consult to US government and policy groups, work as denominational and religious leaders, and build international schools and service organizations.

Students intending to enter the academic profession as professors are prepared to teach in a diverse context, and from the moment they begin the program they are working and learning from faculty members and other students as colleagues. The GTU is a place to develop one's voice while engaged as a teacher and scholar.
