Overview

Harvard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Partakes of a Long Tradition of Education

Since its founding in 1636 as a small college primarily dedicated to the training of ministers, Harvard has grown into a great university, known throughout the world for its high standards and unmatched facilities for the cultivation of learning. The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), which now is composed of 57 degree-granting departments, divisions, and committees, began in 1872 when Harvard's governing boards created the Graduate Department

GSAS Offers a Full Complement of Graduate Degree Programs and Joint-Degree Programs

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University offers the following degrees: the Master of Arts (A.M.), Master of Science (S.M.), Master of Engineering (M.E.), Master of Forest Science (M.F.S.), and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These degrees are offered in programs ranging from African and African American studies to statistics. In addition, there are sixteen interfaculty programs. Students may also obtain a coordinated J.D./Ph.D., offered through some academic departments and Harvard Law School as well as the M.D./Ph.D., offered through some academic departments and Harvard Medical School.

Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Has an Innovative, Interdisciplinary Structure

In addition to the programs offered by GSAS, the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS), a school within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), offers doctoral and master's degree programs. These distinctive programs lie at the interfaces of engineering, the applied sciences (from biology to physics), and technology. Students interested in earning a degree in engineering sciences can choose from graduate specialization programs in bioengineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences and engineering, or mechanical engineering. In an effort to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of modern engineering research, SEAS does not have traditional academic departments.

In Addition to Financial Assistance, Most GSAS Students Receive Two Years of Full Support

Financial assistance for Graduate School of Arts and Sciences students is available through Harvard and outside fellowships, assistantships, federal work-study, and loans. Financial aid is awarded based on both merit and need, as determined by the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Most admitted students are guaranteed full support for two or more years of study. In the third and following years, most students can support themselves through teaching and research. If necessary, loan funds are usually available to supplement these sources.

GSAS Boasts a Diverse Student Body of Nearly 4,000 Students from All Backgrounds

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University has an enrollment of nearly 4,000 students. The student body is extremely diverse. Approximately 32 percent of the students are international, and 45 percent are women. Approximately 23 percent are enrolled in humanities programs, while some 50 percent are in natural sciences, and 27 percent are pursuing social sciences programs.

Student Organizations Provide Outlets for a Broad Range of Extracurricular Interests

The wide range of interests of the students in Harvard's GSAS is reflected in a variety of organizations and activities. For example, the GSAS Alliance for Justice in the Middle East is a secular, humanist group providing Harvard University with a forum for critical discussion of issues related to the contemporary situation in the Middle East. The Biomedical Graduate Students Organization provides seminars, outings, and social activities for the education and entertainment of graduate students at the Harvard community as a whole. GSAS Capoeira Angola is a group involved in the practice of the martial art of Capoeira. These are just a few examples of the many diverse opportunities available to Harvard graduate students.
