Overview

Practical Graduate Education

Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU) offers 14 master's degree programs ranging from Master of Business Administration to Master of Arts in Diplomacy and Military Studies. Every master's degree program at HPU features a combination of small classes, practical experience, and hands-on learning.

Hawai'i Pacific University students benefit in particular from the university's relationship with the research institutes, military bases, multinational corporations, and other institutions of higher education in Hawai'i. Excellent local networking opportunities help students both during their studies and after graduation.

Uniquely situated in the heart of the Pacific, HPU provides a diverse, international environment that is both rare and valuable for graduate students in all disciplines. Notably, HPU is rated a "Best in the West" college by both The Princeton Review and U.S. News and World Report. Barron's business magazine also recognizes HPU as a "Best Buy" in college education. In addition, Military Advanced Education magazine named HPU one of the "Top 30 Colleges and Universities for Military Service Members."

Flexible Programs

Following a traditional semester system with 15-week fall and spring semesters, HPU also offers accelerated sessions including a winter term and three summer sessions of various lengths.

Hawai'i Pacific designs its curriculum and its programs to accommodate both full- and part-time students.

HPU's part-time programs are designed to help working students. Every course students need to get their degrees is offered at night or on weekends at some point during a student's studies. This flexibility does sometimes require extra planning to fulfill all the coursework requirements, but HPU's student advisers are always available to help with scheduling.

Certificate Programs for Professional Development

Hawai'i Pacific University offers graduate certificate programs for individuals with a variety of professional needs, including working adults that wish to enhance their careers without seeking an advanced degree, degree-seeking students complementing their main area of study, and graduate degree holders desiring additional professional development. The graduate certificate programs at HPU are offered in campus-based, distance learning, or online formats.

There are over 20 certificate programs available including Healthcare Management, Software Engineering, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Human Resource Management, Information Systems, Diplomacy and Military Studies (DMS), and Global Leadership and Sustainable Development (GLSD).

Joint Degrees for Multiple Disciplines

HPU has numerous joint degree programs in many areas including business, information systems, human resources, organizational change, and nursing. Each program seeks to combine two disciplines to expand the student's expertise into broader, interdisciplinary capabilities.

For example, the joint degree in MBA/MAGLSD provides tomorrow's business managers with both leading-edge management techniques and the global perspective required to compete profitably and responsibly in rapidly changing environments.

Graduate students seeking joint degrees also expand the range of their interaction with faculty, leading to more networking opportunities during their studies and upon graduation.

In addition to the MBA/MAGLSD, HPU offers numerous other joint masters degrees:

- Organizational Change and Communication (MAOC/MACOM)

- Business Administration and Communication (MBA/MACOM)

- Business Administration and Human Resource Management (MBA/MAHRM)

- Business Administration and Organizational Change (MBA/MAOC)

- Business Administration and Information Systems (MBA/IS)

- Information Systems and Diplomacy and Military Studies (MSIS/MADMS)

- Information Systems & Human Resource Management (MSIS/MAHRM)

- Information Systems & Global Leadership and Sustainable Development (MSIS.MAGLSD)

- Information Systems & Organizational Change (MSIS/MAOC)

- Nursing & Business Administration (MSN/MBA)

A Research Focus

Graduate students have the opportunity to research exciting topics across many fields. HPU partners with research institutions, such as the Oceanic Institute, to conduct large-scale projects.

Graduate students, for example, work to develop carbon fuel cells that use green waste as a renewable fuel source, perform monthly environmental monitoring of Kaneohe Bay and the offshore waters of East Oahu, and discover methods of increasing aquatic food production while simultaneously promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources.

Diverse and Talented Faculty

HPU has more than 600 full-time and part-time faculty members from around the world with outstanding academic and professional credentials, ensuring that students can access a world's worth of knowledge and experiences. Faculty range from top level executives at Fortune 500 companies to state government leaders that enliven the learning experience with real-world knowledge. Majority of faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields and are renowned for the personal interest they take in each and every one of their students.

Scholarships, Assistantships, and Financial Aid

Institutional scholarships and assistantships are available for new, full-time, degree-seeking students that demonstrate financial need. When evaluating such requests, Hawai'i Pacific University also considers the student's academic record, level of community involvement and service orientation, and any professional work achievements.

HPU's four scholarship programs -- Graduate Trustee, Graduate Dean, Graduate Leader and International Scholarship programs -- offer between $2,000 - $6,000 per year. Depending on the program, the awards can go to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or international students.

The Financial Center of the Pacific

Strategically located in the center of the Pacific--the region with the fastest growing economies in the world--HPU provides an American education in an international setting. Cosmopolitan, culturally vibrant, and ethnically diverse, HPU provides the perfect backdrop to student learning experiences.

The island of Oahu has everything a motivated, career-oriented student could want in the way of academic support, employment opportunities, and personal recreation. Students enjoy all kinds of employment and internship opportunities, ethnic foods, cultural events, musical concerts, and activities -- all within walking distance of the campuses and the student housing areas. Not to mention, Hawai'i is famous for its clean air and water and a population that enjoys the longest average life expectancy among the 50 states in the nation. In fact, Honolulu was ranked among the "Best Small Cities for College Students" by the American Institute for Economic Research and the "Best Place to be Happy" by Men's Health magazine.
