Overview

John Brown University Offers Graduate Counseling Degrees

Since 1995, John Brown University's graduate counseling programs have been implementing their mission to prepare counselors with Christ-like character, integrity, compassion, and commitment to be reflective professionals and skilled decision makers. The conceptual framework of Competence, Attitudes and character, Relationships, and Essential knowledge (CARE) represents the key nature of this mission.

Through the pursuit of a counseling master's degree in one of four majors, a student at John Brown is prepared professionally for counseling and guidance positions in public and private elementary and secondary schools, community agencies, private agencies, and pastoral settings.

Majors include Marriage and Family Therapy, Community Counseling, and School Counseling. The following emphases can be added to any of the three majors: Marriage and Family Therapy, Community Counseling, School Counseling and Play Therapy. Regardless of the major chosen, students benefit from the distinctive features available at JBU, including Christian values-based learning, experiential learning through hands-on training, and nationally recognized faculty members.

Marriage and Family Therapy

John Brown University's Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy is designed to meet the national standards of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). Upon completion of the 64-hour program, students are eligible to take the national examination in MFT and to pursue state licensure.

Community Counseling

The Master of Science in Community Counseling is for a candidate preparing for work as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). Upon completion of the 61-hour degree program, students are eligible to sit for the National Counselor Examination (NCE) and pursue state licensure as LPCs.

School Counseling

John Brown University's Master of Science in School Counseling prepares students for school counseling and guidance positions in elementary and secondary schools. Graduates with teaching licenses, full-time teaching experience, and passing scores on the PRAXIS exam will be licensed by the Arkansas Department of Education.

Nationally Recognized Faculty

JBU faculty members are among the best when it comes to education and experience. All full-time faculty members and many adjunct faculty members have doctorate level degrees. All have real-life experience as counselors, and all possess the Christ-like character, integrity, compassion, and commitment to be reflective professionals and skilled decision makers that they pass along to students in the graduate counseling programs.

Entrance requirements

To be accepted into one of JBU's graduate counseling programs, applicants must have bachelor's degrees from accredited universities or colleges and a score of 300 on the GRE if taken after 8/1/11 (score must be 1000 if taken prior to 8/1/11). An applicant must also submit an online application, transcripts, recommendations from three people and a 200-word essay describing professional plans and the applicant's reason for seeking acceptance into JBU's Graduate School.
