Johnson and Wales University -- Physician Assistant Studies Overview

The Physician Assistant Program is offered through the Center for Physician Assistant Studies, an 18,000-square-foot building in Providence's "Knowledge District," home to many high-tech health services, research facilities, and medical facilities, including Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children's Hospital, and Brown University's Alpert Medical School. JWU is one of only a few universities in the country with an entire facility dedicated to the education of physician assistants. The Physician Assistant Program at JWU is a 24-month, 104-credit, full-time course of study. During the first 12 months of the program, students will follow a curriculum of preclinical studies in preparation for 12 months of clinical experiences. Upon successful completion of the program, a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies is awarded to the graduate. The inaugural class begins June 2014.

Johnson & Wales University's main campus is located in Providence, Rhode Island, which is New England's second-largest city. Providence has a historic charm in combination with the resources of a cultural, business, and industrial center. The city is equally vibrant, with a thriving arts and music scene, professional sports, and access to 400 miles of nearby coastline.

The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the Physician Assistant Studies Program at Johnson and Wales University. Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status. The status indicates that the plans and resource allocation for the proposed program appear to demonstrate the program's ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards, if fully implemented as planned. Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class. Successful graduates will receive a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from JWU and will be qualified to take the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam (PANCE) that is required for licensure as a physician assistant.
