Program Overview -- Master of Public Administration

The online Master of Public Administration degree program at Kent State University provides the knowledge and skills students need to advance their careers in the public sector. Using experiential learning techniques that help students to apply what they learn in real time, this program positions students for senior management positions in local, state and regional governments, as well as in nonprofit organizations.

M.P.A. Degree Program Mission Statement

Kent State University's M.P.A. degree program seeks to enhance the quality of public sector and non-profit management by teaching ethical leadership and theoretical understandings of administration; enhancing knowledge, analytical skills and technical abilities; and emphasizing experiential learning opportunities to apply theory and skills. Toward that end, the program provides professional-level graduate education to pre- and in-service students through a high quality online format.

Program Details

Kent State's online M.P.A. degree program is nationally accredited by NASPAA and is one of only a select number of online M.P.A. degree programs in the United States fully accredited by NASPAA. The program is designed for busy working professionals, with the following features:

- The program is 36 credits in length, consisting of 12 three-credit courses.

- Each course is 7 weeks in length, with 2 courses taken sequentially each semester. This allows students to focus on 1 course at a time while still completing the program in 2 years.

- To keep class sizes small and maximize collaboration, multiple sections of each course are offered.

- The program consists of 8 required core courses (24 credits), 3 elective courses (9 credits), and a final capstone project (3 credits).

- For those not employed full-time in the public or non profit sector, a formal field placement internship (3 credit hours) will be added to the 36 credit hours of coursework.

- Once students are admitted to the program, their student counselors will craft their personalized degree plans, giving them clear course sequences and paths to graduation.

Technology

Courses are delivered through the course management system, Blackboard Learn. Course content consists of text, narrated PowerPoint presentations, video and audio, live chats, discussion groups and other learning enhancements. To participate in this online program, students will need computers and broadband Internet connections. Their programs may have further requirements that include the ability to record video and audio. If students have questions regarding technology requirements for the program, they should contact the student counselors at onlinedegrees@kent.edu or toll-free at 844.497.3239.
