Master's Degree in Health Education
The Department of Food Science, Nutrition, and Health Promotion offers a master's degree with an emphasis in health education/health promotion, through distance learning at Mississippi State University.
This degree is designed for professionals interested in enhancing their skills in design, implementation, and evaluation of disease prevention and health promotion programs.
Students may begin taking courses at the start of any semester. Fall semester courses begin in mid-August and end in December. Spring semester courses are from mid-January to May. Summer courses are offered from June through July.
This program is for people interested in pursuing or advancing careers as health educators in the following fields: outbreak investigation/epidemiology; worksite health promotion programs; school health education, program planning, and curriculum development; corporate consulting firms; college and university campuses; public health prevention service; public policy advocacy for health issues; community and non-profit organizations; local, state, and federal government agencies; hospital and rehabilitation facilities; the World Health Organization (WHO); and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
All courses offered in the Master of Science in Food Science, Nutrition, & Health Promotion program are fully accredited through Mississippi State University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
The coursework in this program has been developed around the competencies required for an individual to become a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES). CHES credentialing is available through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing and gives health educators a competitive edge in the field.

Costs and Requirements
Tuition is assessed on a per credit hour basis at the prevailing rates as determined by the Institution of Higher Learning, the governing board of the University. In addition, all courses with the exception of research hour courses, directed individual studies, and directed projects are assessed a $75.00 per course distance fee. Tuition rates and distance fees are subject to change from semester to semester.
Textbooks are not included in the tuition rates. Students must order textbooks each semester for all courses in which they are enrolled. Some courses may require additional materials, such as lab manuals. All textbooks are available for online purchase via the Mississippi State University's Barnes & Noble bookstore.
For successful completion of the program, it is recommended that students have Internet access via DSL or equivalent broadband connectivity option. Traditional dial-up Internet services do not provide adequate support to the many technologies used within the program.
