A Nationally Renowned and Award Winning College of Education and Human Services

The College of Education and Human Services is committed to advancing knowledge and educating professionals in a diverse array of fields, including teaching, inclusion and special education, nutrition, exercise science and physical education, counseling, public health, family and child studies, educational leadership, and literacy education. In addition to its more than 40 graduate programs that lead to master's degrees, certifications, or certificates, the College of Education and Human Services is actively engaged in doctoral education. Doctoral programs include the PhD in Counselor Education program and an EdD in Teacher Education and Teacher Development program.

With a full time tenured/tenure track faculty of 115 scholars and more than 4,000 students, the college strives to be a progressive, innovative, national leader in the preparation of educators and human services professionals who possess the knowledge, skills, and habits of mind to work toward a better educated, healthier, and more just society. The college's programs for educators reflect deep partnerships with the university's arts and sciences disciplines and with public schools, and foster commitments to culturally responsive teaching and teaching for critical thinking. Outstanding human services programs in counseling, family and child studies, public health, nutrition and food sciences, athletic training, and exercise science all combine academic rigor and clinical experiences and place strong emphases on translating cutting-edge research into exemplary practice.

The College of Education and Human Services, one of the original members of the National Network for Educational Renewal begun by John Goodlad, is one of the premier schools of education in the nation. In recognition of its work in the field of teacher education, Montclair State University was recently named one of the Ten Leading Schools of Education by the George Lucas Educational Foundation. The College of Education and Human Services was also ranked in the top 20 for elementary and secondary teacher preparation by "US News and World Report" in its Best Graduate Schools and in the top 10 leading teacher education programs by Edutopia. The college has a long and proud history dating back to 1908 and offers several advantages for those pursuing graduate educations:

Accreditations

Accreditations held by Montclair State University include accreditation from:

- the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education Programs (CAATE): Athletic Training program.

- the Commission on the Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE), American Dietetics Association: Dietetics program.

- the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP): Counseling program.

- the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE): Programs to prepare educators. (MSU has been continuously accredited since 1954, when NCATE accredited its first group of teacher education programs.)

The Center of Pedagogy

Montclair State University was the first university in the nation to create a formal structure in which faculty members from arts and sciences, education, and the public schools -- called the Tripartite -- are equally involved in the ongoing work of teacher education. Anyone who is involved in the education of educators is a member of the Center of Pedagogy. Policies and practices are established by collaborative groups with equal representation from all parts of the Tripartite.

The Center of Pedagogy coordinates all aspects of teacher education. Under the umbrella of the Center of Pedagogy, students will find a number of programs and offices including the Montclair State University Network for Educational Renewal, Agenda for Education in a Democracy, Advocacy Center, Office of Admissions and Retention, Fieldwork Department, Urban Teaching Academy, Urban Teacher Residency Program, and ADP Center.

The Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health

The newly established Center for Autism and Early Childhood Mental Health is a clinical, consultation/professional development, and research center concerned with the optimal development of infants, children, and families, with and without developmental disabilities. The center offers programs and services such as: clinical services with developmental and relations models of assessment and intervention for children with autism; expanded infant and early childhood mental health services; a post baccalaureate certificate in developmental models of autism intervention; consultation and training services integrating mental health in infancy; childhood and school-based programs; and a professional developmental program for clergy formation, in infant, child and family development.

Admissions

The majority of Montclair State's graduate programs do not have specific deadlines. For those programs without a specific deadline, The Graduate School recommends that students submit their credentials as early as possible. Students should apply well in advance of their preferred start dates, to ensure comprehensive reviews of their applications. Once all of the application requirements are submitted to The Graduate School please allow 3-6 weeks for an admission decision.

International Student Services

Montclair State's Global Education Center, recognized as one of the nation's best programs by NAFSA: Association of International Educators, provides leadership and organizational focus for the university's globalization efforts. The center coordinates all international activities on campus, advances international objectives across colleges and schools, builds alliances, creates and cultivates international partnerships, and serves as an international resource for the campus and the community. The Office of International Services (IS) promotes international education by providing a range of services, programs, and advocacy that supports the growth, development, and welfare of international students, scholars, and faculty members at Montclair State University. These are:

- immigration advising and documentation

- visa support

- academic, legal, housing, visa, and cultural assistance for international students

- orientations for new international scholars

- social adjustment and cultural support programs

- Global Living Community (GLC), a residential community of international and American students at Montclair State University, where students can learn about the traditions and customs of students from a variety of countries
