Overview

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences: A Traditional Liberal Arts Education Beyond the Classroom and Campus

The motto of The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is, "We build minds, minds build everything else." This motto points to the tradition that a liberal arts education serves as the bedrock for all subsequent learning. The College of Humanities and Social Sciences combines a traditional liberal arts education with focused preparation in a wide range of disciplines and professional areas. With 20 areas of graduate study and 16 professional certificate programs, the college offers students opportunities to build a lifetime of learning in the humanities and social sciences while preparing for successful careers.

The college's master's programs in world languages, English, history, linguistics, political science, and psychology provide excellent content knowledge while offering students the intellectual flexibility and adaptability today's jobs require. Many master's students enter the workplace; others use their master's preparation for entry into doctoral or professional programs.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences has long recognized the demands of the marketplace for broadly educated and fully prepared professionals ready to provide the best possible services to the local and regional communities. The college offers post-baccalaureate students training as child advocates, paralegals, teachers of psychology, and experts in several areas of languages and literatures. Graduate students may choose from professional programs in audiology, speech and language pathology, child advocacy, school psychology, law and governance, and several other related areas.

Whether pursuing doctoral degrees in the highly competitive and widely recognized audiology program, master's degrees in industrial and organizational psychology, or any other graduate or post-baccalaureate program within The College of Humanities and Social Sciences, students have access to an environment that fosters research, critical thinking, and scholarship.

Industry, government, and education are all areas of employment where potential employers want to hire critical and creative learners who examine questions from more than one perspective -- innovators who propose creative solutions to problems. They want people equipped with the crucial intellectual skills of analysis and communication, and the social understanding needed to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world. In other words, they want students who have studied in the humanities and social sciences.
