Overview

Research Programs Spanning the Globe at The College of Science and Mathematics

It's difficult to think of any national or global challenges that do not require the insight of well-prepared scientists, mathematicians, and science and math educators. From continued advances in genetic engineering, to advanced energy technologies, to ever smaller and more powerful computational tools and new approaches in sustainability sciences, the growing needs in the science disciplines are prominent and essential.

The College of Science and Mathematics (CSAM) has a deeply rooted commitment to the success of its students and works diligently to keep pace with changing academic needs in a rapidly changing world. The college creates and maintains relevant and current programs that cross disciplines and responds to regional, national, and global needs. The college offers more than 35 graduate programs, including one of the nation's few PhD programs in Environmental Management, a disciplinary intensive EdD in Mathematics Education, as well as innovative master's degree programs in pharmaceutical biochemistry and blended programs with business to best prepare students for careers in the large and changing pharmaceutical industry.

Research is a key component for CSAM student experience. The college's research programs span the globe with opportunities in China, Argentina, Antarctica, Thailand, and the Philippines. CSAM faculty members and students publish in top tier journals and are well funded through support from the National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Environmental Protection Agency, National Institutes of Health, NJ Department of Environmental Protection, Sea Grant, Department of Education, and many other agencies, including industries such as Bristol-Myers Squibb, Roche Pharmaceuticals, PSEG, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Faculty members and students share research in areas as diverse as global warming and Antarctic ice melt; exploring ways to reduce computer "phishing"; population dynamics of New Jersey bears; biochemical and molecular approaches to helping control malaria, river blindness, elephantiasis, breast cancer and other threatening diseases; and methods to remotely identify and differentiate earthbound structures, providing students with a veritable spectrum of research opportunities.

The College of Science and Mathematics offers state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities for students at all level of graduate study. The experiences and the knowledge gained in these settings help graduates emerge as science and science education professionals, ready to lead in the workplace and help transform society.

The College of Science and Mathematics: Home to Five Institutes and Centers for Technology and Research

The College of Sciences and Mathematics is also home to 5 institutes and centers offering the latest technology and research opportunities. These include the Center for Remote Sensing, whose activities are sponsored by NASA and the European Space Agency; the 240-acre New Jersey School of Conservation; the Margaret and Herman Sokol Institute for Pharmaceutical Life Sciences; the Center for Environmental Management and Analysis; the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies; and the Passaic River Institute.

CSAM offers a wide choice of activities and non-curricular programs for students and alumni. These range from the Margaret and Herman Sokol Science Lectures (with such luminary speakers as neuropsychologist Oliver Sacks and string theorist Brian Green), CSAM Seminars in all departments, Science Professional Series, PharmFest, Student Research Symposium, and a Residence Hall floor with guaranteed housing for CSAM majors. The college is supported by strong programs in pedagogy, such as those found in the Bristol-Myers Squibb Science Teaching and Learning Center, and research and community programs, such as the PSEG Institute for Sustainability Studies and the Passaic River Institute. In addition CSAM is home to strong student community programs including the NIH funded MARC (Minority Access to Research Careers), EOF supported Health Careers, NSF funded AMPS (Alliance for Minority Participation in the Sciences), and a new Science Honors Innovation Program (SHIP) funded by Roche and the Merck Foundation.

The New Jersey School of Conservation

The New Jersey School of Conservation (NJSOC) is the oldest university-operated environmental education center in the US. It is located 57 miles from the Montclair campus on a 240-acre tract located in Stokes State Forest in Sussex County, New Jersey. The mission of Montclair State University's School of Conservation is to gather knowledge of Earth systems through research and to communicate this knowledge through education. The school's goal is to contribute to the resolution of environmental problems by cultivating environmentally responsible behaviors that will encourage scientists, teachers, students and citizens to promote sustainable practices in their communities. The environmental education programs provide field experiences in the environmental sciences, humanities, outdoor pursuits, and the social sciences. Each academic year the NJSOC provides environmental education programs for nearly 9,000 elementary/secondary school students, and nearly 1,000 teachers from about 100 schools.

Admissions

The majority of Montclair State's graduate programs do not have specific deadlines.
