Overview

A Private Health Sciences University with a Research Focus

The New York Medical College, shares a beautiful, suburban campus with Westchester Medical Center, and is located 15 miles north of New York City. It is one of the nation's largest private health science universities, with approximately 1,400 students, 1,338 residents and clinical fellows, and over 3,000 faculty members.

The college serves as the primary public health resource for 10 county health departments in New York and Connecticut, coordinating public health promotion with disaster management, and is affiliated with over 20 tri-state area hospitals. It is a leading New York biomedical research center with over 200 researchers working in the areas of cardiovascular disease, cancer kidney disease, infectious disease, and neuroscience. The college is also part of the region's active network of disability, social, and advocacy services, offering many opportunities for student community involvement.

Flexible Graduate Degree and Certificate Programs

The School of Health Sciences and Practice offers its 500+ students masters and doctoral degrees and graduate certificate programs in a variety of health sciences. The flexible public health programs have afternoon, evening, and weekend and online classes to accommodate working professionals.

A joint degree program with the New York Medical College School of Medicine further gives students the opportunity to earn a Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree simultaneously with their M.D. degree.

The public health programs are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (www.CEPH.org).

Online and on-campus graduate certificate programs offer options for specialization in health education, industrial and global health, long-term care, children with special needs, emergency preparedness, and public health.

Four Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) Programs

Students pursuing a master's degree in public health can choose from 4 different online and on-campus concentrations, all requiring 46 credits.

The behavioral sciences and health promotion program prepares students for careers focused on the development of public health programs that prevent illness by encouraging behavioral changes and healthy lifestyles. The M.P.H. may be combined with the graduate certificate in Health Education.

The epidemiology program prepares students to work in public health agencies, hospitals, research institutions, and other facilities examining the distribution and determination of human disease. Participants learn to evaluate the demographic, behavioral, and environmental factors that affect disease frequency.

Online and on-campus environmental health science degree candidates are prepared for careers as health and safety officers, in environmental monitoring, government inspection and permits, or environmental research. Studies include environmental hazards, air and water quality, pollution, and environmental law courses. The M.P.H. may be combined with the graduate certificate in industrial hygiene.

The online and on-campus health policy and management program offers an individualized plan for each student, dependent on their background and goals, for careers in a variety of health services and research settings. The courses leading to the M.P.H. degree are designed to provide the student with an understanding of the business, programmatic, planning and policy areas of healthcare. The online and on-campus graduate certificates in global health and emergency preparedness may be combined with any M.P.H.

Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) Degree

The Doctor of Public Health (Dr.P.H.) in Health Policy and Management prepares health care professionals with the knowledge and skills to assume local, state and national leadership positions in public health practice within the public and private sectors. The focus of the program is on understanding the socioeconomic determinants of health. This 54-credit post-master's program features courses in public health law and leadership, socio-economics, and clinical and research ethics. It includes an internship and dissertation, and requires a minimum of 2 years of residency.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) Program

The 3-year, full-time, 120 credits Doctor of Physical Therapy D.P.T. program features a problem-based learning format that collaborates with teaching and research in many departments of the college, including anatomy, histology, neuroscience, physiology, orthopedics, neurology, cardiology, surgery, and public health. D.P.T. students have the option to pursue a dual D.P.T./M.P.H. degree.

Students also participate in 5 full-time clinical practice affiliations (each 6 to 8 weeks in length) in a variety of U.S. healthcare settings. The D.P.T. program culminates with a doctoral project in clinical research, public health, or a mentored teaching practicum.

Recent program graduates achieved a 92 percent first-time passing rate, and 100 percent retake passing rate within 3 months of graduation, on the National Licensure Examination, according to the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy.

Speech-Language Pathology Master's Degree

The M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology (S.L.P.) is one of the few medically-oriented programs in the country with a strong focus on public health. This intensive 21-month, 72-credit program is designed for full-time students to acquire qualification for licensure --recent graduates have achieved a 100% passing rate on the PRAXIS exam. Accepted students who do not have an undergraduate degree in speech-language pathology can be accommodated in this program without additional coursework; the school provides a self-study program for the summer before fall admission.

The S.L.P. program prepares students for careers in healthcare settings. Its training incorporates faculty and resources from the university medical school, with coursework focused on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with medical issues.

Students also complete 375 hours of clinical rotations in 150 hospitals, clinics, and schools for children with special needs.

A Wide Variety of Graduate Certificate Programs

NYMC also offers several specialized interest area certificate programs of varying lengths for students not desiring a degree, including: health education (27 credits), children with special healthcare needs (15 credits), industrial hygiene (15 credits), public health (18 credits), global health (12 credits), and emergency preparedness (15 credits).
