Program in Healthcare Interior Design - New York School of Interior Design - Overview

Master of Professional Studies in Healthcare Interior Design

The top-ranked New York School of Interior Design (NYSID) offers the Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Healthcare Interior Design. This MPS is a one-year 30-credit post-professional program designed to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare industry.

The degree was created in response to a growing demand for design from interior designers with specific training in healthcare applications. According to a report by the Center for Health Design, "There is a growing body of evidence that now links the physical environment with safety and quality outcomes for patients and staff."

A Leader in Design for Nearly 100 Years

NYSID, founded in 1916, is an independent college of design, located in Manhattan's Upper East Side on a beautifully renovated Renaissance-Revival campus. The school's guiding principle is that "the successful design of an interior space improves human welfare." NYSID alumni and current students regularly publish their work in magazines such as "Interior Design," "Elle Décor," "Architectural Digest," and "Metropolis."

Faculty members include actively practicing designers, architects, visual artists, and writers. The international advisory board includes such stellar names as Michael Graves, Mario Buatta, and Mica Ertegun. The student-to-faculty member ratio is 12:1.

The New York School of Interior Design is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and the Council of Interior Design Accreditation.

Advanced Degree Specifically for Design Professionals

Healthcare interior design is one of several MPS specializations offered by NYSID. NYSID also offers an MPS in Sustainable Interior Environments and an MPS in Interior Lighting Design. The MPS degree is designed to provide advanced training for students holding professional-level degrees in interior design or architecture from accredited institutions.

A Wide Variety of Careers in a Wide Variety of Healthcare Settings

Graduates of NYSID are prepared to work in a wide variety of healthcare settings, such as hospitals, specialty health centers, critical care units, dementia care centers, aging-in-place facilities, and hybrid healthcare-hospitality centers, such as spas. Graduates serve in professional roles such as healthcare specialist designers, researchers for architectural and design firms, and facility planners in healthcare institutions.

A Cutting-Edge Focus on Green Technology and Emerging Issues

The 30-credit program is designed to be completed in 1 year -- encompassing 2 semesters and a summer session. Instruction examines the history and theory of healthcare, environment and behavior studies, research methods, and applied design. Students study green design and lighting research as it relates to health, productivity, and precision.

A Comprehensive Curriculum

Coursework focuses on 2 themes: understanding healing and restorative environments, and the business of healthcare.

"Survey of Healthcare Environments" is a course that focuses on planning and design for healthcare facilities, with special emphasis of specific care areas, such as oncology, surgery, and pediatrics.

"Materials, Textiles, and Furnishings for Healthcare Settings" explores the appropriate use of these elements, according to their performance, environment-behavior findings, life-cycle, and maintenance.

"Building Systems for Healthcare" explains the special mechanical systems used in hospitals and other care environments.

"Programming for Healthcare Environments" discusses the predesign needs evaluation process and post-occupancy evaluations specifically for healthcare.

"The Business of Healthcare" discusses the models, roles, and structures of different types of healthcare organizations.

"Introduction to Research Methods" explores the methodologies behind evidence-based design, a necessary complement to evidence-based medicine.

"History and Theory of Healthcare" covers the relationship between physical care settings and health across cultures and throughout history.

Hands-On Experience in Healthcare Design

Healthcare studios provide for group and individual design projects relating to small and large-scale healthcare facilities

Accomplished Faculty Members in the Healthcare Field

Leading the program for the New York School of Interior Design is Victor Dadras, R.A., LEED-AP, NCARB, and partner of Dadras Architects. Other faculty members include Mary A Stankos, Director of Risk Management, Illinois Hospital Association; Dale Greenwald, Associate Principal/Interior Design Director, Cannon Design; and Carol Derby, Director of Environmental Strategy at Designtex.

LEED Certified State-Of-The-Art Graduate Center

Due to the rapid growth of its graduate offerings, the school recently built a state-of-the-art graduate center, located on Park Avenue in lower Manhattan. The 40,000 square foot facility is LEED-CI Platinum certified by the US Green Buildings Council.

Thought Leadership in Interior Design

The school demonstrates its thought leadership in interior design through interesting public symposia, panel discussions such as "Living With History: Restoring, Redesigning and Reviving NY's Landmark Interiors," and "The Return of Modernism."

NYSID also sponsors its annual Green Design Awards program to honor the sustainable design contributions of individuals and businesses.
