NewSchool of Architecture and Design

NewSchool of Architecture and Design (NSAD), located in San Diego, California, is one of a only a handful of schools in the western United States that offer fully accredited architecture degree programs that are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB). Graduates students learn from faculty practitioners who encourage collaboration and offer personal attention.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design emphasizes experiential learning, which is critical to the fields of architecture and design. The community promotes sustainable and socially beneficial design solutions. The university also offers career-friendly schedules to meet the needs of its students.

NewSchool of Architecture and Design is part of Laureate International Universities' Centers for Excellence.

The following degree programs are NAAB accredited:

-Bachelor of Architecture (235 quarter undergraduate credits)

-Master of Architecture (preprofessional degree + 90 quarter graduate credits)

-Master of Architecture (non-preprofessional degree + 135 quarter credits)

-Master of Architecture (license +preprofessional degree + 45 quarter credits)

Online Master of Construction Management Degree

The NewSchool of Architecture and Design offers a Master of Construction Management (M.C.M.) degree program that can be completed in 1 year* entirely online. Graduates of the program emerge with an understanding of the new standards in energy efficiency, construction materials, worker safety, environmental protection, and risk mitigation.

Courses aim to help students understand the economic, legal, business and social relationships among the building trades, the architect, and the regulatory environment. Students also develop planning, organization, and execution skills while investigating construction management technologies and innovations that are of great use to construction managers. Students evaluate logistics of construction projects and devise management strategies as they analyze how design, cost, and safety impact implementation.

* Please note that completion of the Master in Construction Management in one year is dependent upon individual progress within the program, including number of courses taken per quarter.

The Master of Architecture I

The Master of Architecture I degree program at NewSchool of Architecture and Design allows students to work toward state licensure. The program is accredited by both the NAAB and the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards as a fulfillment for the requirements for licensure. Graduates also find employment as architectural and engineering managers, civil drafters, drafters, and interior designers.

Students holding a bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field complete the program in 2 years of full-time. Students who hold bachelor's degrees from unrelated fields complete the program in 3 years of full-time study.

The Master of Architecture II

The Master of Architecture II degree program at NewSchool of Architecture and Design is intended for licensed architects who wish to teach. The curriculum provides graduates with a solid understanding of design principles and theory, exploring innovations in sustainable design. The 45-credit program investigates architecture in the context of theory and history, urban studies, tectonics, and professional practice.

The Master of Science in Architecture

The Master of Science (M.S.) in Architecture degree program at NSAD is designed for students who do not plan to pursue licensure in the field, but would like to gain expertise in functional aesthetics and sustainable design and technology. The program introduces students to what is possible through interior design and urban planning through the latest innovations. The 45-credit program can be completed in 1 to 2 years.

The Executive Master of Architecture

The NAAB and NCARBaccredited Executive Master of Architecture degree program is designed for licensed mid-career architects with 5 or more years of experience.

Convenient weekend classes held every other weekend, along with practical applications that can be fulfilled at your current place of employment, will help you balance a continued education with full-time practice. The program can be completed in 9 months.

An Accomplished Faculty

NSAD faculty members are accomplished practitioners in their fields. Professor Robin Brisebois runs his own architecture firm and has received the Orchid Award and the Kitchen of the Year Award from San Diego Home and Garden.

Professor Gilbert Cooke has received numerous awards for teaching, public service, and the design of built projects. He was recently named a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) College of Fellows for his contributions to the field.

Teaching in the Department of Construction Management is George L. Welch who is a registered architect with significant experience managing projects in the built environment, manufacturing, banking, and government. He also serves as a member of the International Code Council.

Applying to NSAD

Students begin the application process online by filling out information about their academic and work backgrounds and contact information. Students also each supply the NSAD with a personal statement, an application fee, college transcripts, portfolios of work, and 2 letters of recommendation. International students also submit TOEFL scores.

Student Achievement

NSAD students regularly win awards for their collaborative or individual projects. NSAD student Noah Kelly, for example, was selected as a finalist in the International "Small Harbor" Young Architects Competition for his proposed solution for a shipyard in Pesaro, Italy. An NSAD team recently won the top award at the prestigious Cal Poly Design Village architecture and design competition for their design of unique portable, habitable structures.

Student Life

All NewSchool of Architecture and Design students are given their own design studio space. They take socialize and exchange ideas in hART Lounge where they also enjoy musical evenings. NSAD hosts a lecture series featuring experts in the field 2 to 3 times a month. The Materials Lab provides a workspace in which students can experiment with new materials, methods, and procedures.
