M.B.A. Program Overview

The M.B.A. program at North Carolina State University has four unique factors that have enabled it to grow and be successful. Technology is a key to the future as well as the economic engine that drives growth in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) region. A focus on technology, which is a core strength of NC State University, and the management of technology enables the M.B.A. program to benefit from RTP's growth and the resulting new job opportunities for graduates. NC State emphasizes real projects with real companies for real learning because this approach provides a superior student experience.

Cross-functional teamwork is an essential part of business today, and the university has made it a key part of its M.B.A. program. The faculty has formed cross-campus collaborations and joint programs that enable M.B.A. students to learn and work with students from many of the disciplines on campus, including those in the Colleges of Engineering, Textiles, Design, and Life Sciences.

When students come to NC State's M.B.A. program, they learn about value: how to create it and how to estimate it. The M.B.A. program is one of the best values in management education today.

Programs and Curricular Focus

The Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) at NC State emphasizes the management of innovation and technology. Students take an integrated core curriculum, with a focus on technology, business processes, and practical applications, in a collaborative learning environment. Through simulations, case studies, and projects, students learn from real-world examples and experiences. Both full- and part-time students take a course in managerial effectiveness, which emphasizes communication skills, networking, negotiations, team skills, ethics, and social responsibility.

Students begin the program by taking core courses. Students then choose a concentration from biotech/pharmaceuticals, finance, marketing management, product innovation management, services management, supply chain management, and technology entrepreneurship. Full-time students complete the program in 21 months; part-time students complete the program in 33 months.

The technology focus of the program comes from three sources. First, all students take core courses related to technology, including strategy, operations, and managing people in a high-technology environment. Even courses in traditional management subjects, such as economics and marketing, have a technology slant through the choice of cases and projects used in the course. Second, the concentrations focus on the interface between management and technology, with classes team-taught with faculty members from engineering and other colleges. Third, most students have a strong technology background and seek careers with high-technology companies.

Students and the M.B.A. Experience

Almost all M.B.A. students have professional work experience, many in high-technology industries, such as telecommunications or software, and others in industries such as health care or financial services, in which technology is the key to a competitive advantage. A technical background is not essential for the M.B.A., but all students must be willing to learn about technology and the management challenges it creates. More than 75 percent of M.B.A. students have undergraduate degrees in business, computer science, sciences, or engineering. The rest come from a variety of fields, including the social sciences and humanities.

Management education is highly interactive. The program challenges students to become active participants in their education through interaction with faculty members, peers, and the business community. Many professors formulate their courses around case discussions, which give students an opportunity to confront real business problems and practice the art of business communication. Class simulations and team projects also create realistic environments for decision making. During the first semester, students are assigned to a peer group of 4 or 5 people who collaborate for a large portion of assignments, class projects, and outside study. The team environment exposes students to a wealth of contrasting experiences and perspectives and helps build relationships.

The average full-time M.B.A. student has 4 years of work experience. The average part-time student has 7 years of professional experience. Women comprise approximately 30 percent of each entering full-time class; members of minority groups account for approximately 15 percent; international students account for approximately 33 percent of the full-time class.

Special Features

BioPharma management is an exciting new area of specialization at NC State. Life sciences comprise one of today's fastest-growing business sectors, offering new opportunities for those who can provide managerial leadership in a technology-focused environment. This concentration was designed and is taught by faculty members with extensive experience in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, working closely with industry leaders located right in the Research Triangle Park.

Services management is another new area of concentration. Services are dominating the economy, providing about three-fourths of all jobs -- a rising share of which are highly skilled and technology-intensive. This is fueling a growing need for managers skilled in outsourcing, consulting, and process re-engineering. NC State's management and engineering faculties are at the forefront of curriculum development and research in the evolving discipline of services science, management, and engineering (SSME), working with IBM and a growing list of other company partners. Two tracks are offered: relationship management and innovation management.

The Supply Chain Resource Consortium (SCRC) is dedicated to achieving innovation and excellence in the practice of supply chain management. The SCRC is a corporately funded organization charged with providing access to cutting-edge supply chain research and intelligence to its corporate partners. Member companies actively recruit M.B.A. students for internships and permanent positions. Bank of America Distinguished University Professor Robert Handfield directs the SCRC and works closely with the member companies to keep the program on the cutting edge.

The Technology, Education, and Commercialization (TEC) Program within the M.B.A. teaches students how to turn technologies into business, using real technologies as live case studies. Supported by the National Science Foundation, the Kenan Institute, and several other organizations, graduate students and faculty members in the College of Management work closely in teams with their counterparts in the science and engineering disciplines to identify, evaluate, and commercialize promising technologies. The TEC curriculum follows the complete product-development cycle. Students gain evaluation skills for commercializing new technologies, along with an understanding of what it takes to start and run a high-technology business. Students also interact with business experts and entrepreneurs from outside the university.

The Faculty

The graduate faculty members of the M.B.A. program are outstanding teachers and researchers. In recent years, faculty members have been selected for the University of North Carolina Board of Governors' Award, Alumni Distinguished Professorships, and the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers. They match their teaching methods to the subject material, using case discussions, group projects, lectures, class discussions, and guest speakers as appropriate.

Several faculty members serve on the editorial boards of journals in accounting, finance, marketing, operations, project management, and strategy. They have been ranked in the top 20 nationally for publishing in the top economics and finance journals.

Many faculty members held positions in management before receiving their doctoral degrees and stay in touch with today's business world through consulting and executive education.

The Business School Network

M.B.A. students have multiple opportunities to network with businesses. Some of these opportunities are built into the courses. Through the Supply Chain Resource Cooperative, students interact with member companies through student projects, internships, and biannual conferences. Students in the TEC program interact extensively with venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and lawyers to learn how to launch a high-technology enterprise. Many TEC projects involve technologies that are under consideration at local companies.

Based on his experience with TEC, Jeffrey Glass, Director of Research and Development at Kobe Steel USA in Research Triangle Park, said, "I think the concept is fantastic. There is a real void in teaching product development in high-tech. So I think this program will be great for industry." The practicum requirement also gives students the opportunity to interact with local companies.

Outside the classroom, many full-time students help finance their graduate study and gain valuable work experience in co-op positions at the leading companies in the Research Triangle area, such as IBM, Nortel, GlaxoSmithKline, and Ericsson. These positions can be obtained either through the university or by networking with classmates. Another key part of the M.B.A. network is the College of Management's Board of Advisors, which includes representatives from the leading companies in the region, including IBM, Nortel, Wachovia, and Progress Energy.

The College and Environs

North Carolina State University was founded in 1889 as a land-grant institution. Within 100 years, it has become one of the nation's leading research universities. Located in the Research Triangle, a world-renowned center of research, industry, technology, and education, the College of Management is housed on the 623-acre main campus of NC State, which lies just west of downtown Raleigh, the state capital. NC State comprises 11 colleges and schools serving a total student population of 28,000. More than 5,000 of those students are in graduate programs.

Facilities

The College of Management is headquartered in Nelson Hall, which houses classrooms, computer labs, and the offices of the faculty members and students. Classrooms feature tiered seating, laptop connections, a wireless network, and complete multimedia facilities. The College of Management's computer lab houses 100 microcomputers connected to a campuswide network. Students have access to a wide range of spreadsheet, word processing, database, statistical, and econometric software, along with several large databases.

D. H. Hill Library, which is located near the center of the campus, offers access to millions of volumes of books and journals and an extensive and growing collection of CD-ROM and electronic databases. Graduate students also have borrowing privileges at Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Placement

The Career Services Center is dedicated to educating full- and part-time students and to guiding their search for employment opportunities. The staff teaches students the skills required for a self-directed search, enabling them to secure post-M.B.A. employment and to manage their career.

The placement and promotion of graduates is the strongest testament to the value of the NC State M.B.A. program. The program's alumni include managers, entrepreneurs, and innovators in all fields and in all sizes of companies. Recent employers include SAS Institute, IBM, Progress Energy, Red Hat, John Deere, GlaxoSmithKline, Cisco Systems, and several local start-up ventures.

Admission

M.B.A. students must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and are strongly encouraged to have had courses in calculus, statistics, accounting, and economics. Calculus must be completed prior to enrollment, with a grade of C or better. Admissions decisions are based on previous academic performance, GMAT scores, essays, letters of reference, and previous work and volunteer experience.

Applicants whose native language is not English, regardless of citizenship, must also submit TOEFL scores of at least 250 (computer-based); applicants to the part-time programs may apply for a TOEFL waiver. Interviews are by invitation.

Finances

The budget for M.B.A. students depends on the number of credit hours the student takes and the student's residency status. For full-time students who are North Carolina residents, tuition and fees in 2008-2009 were $6,909 per semester; the estimated total for living expenses, including tuition and fees, books, medical insurance, housing, food, clothing, transportation, and other miscellaneous items, was $15,000 per semester.

Tuition and fees for full-time nonresidents were $12,870 per semester, with estimated total living expenses of $2,100 per semester. Part-time students who are North Carolina residents pay $4,350 per semester for tuition and fees only; nonresidents pay $8,868.

Graduate assistantships and scholarships are available to full-time students through the College of Management. Grants and loan programs are available through the Graduate School and the university's Financial Aid Office.

Application Facts and Dates

The NC State M.B.A. program accepts applications for the fall semester only for the full-time program, with application deadlines of October 13, January 5, and March 2. Part-time students may enter the program in either fall or spring, with application deadlines of October 13 for spring entry and February 9 and April 6 for fall entry. Once an application has been received and is complete, it is reviewed for admission. This rolling admission process allows an applicant to receive an admission decision within 6 weeks of receipt of a completed application.
