Overview

Master of Arts in Communication, Media and Cultural Studies

The Master of Arts in Communication, Media, and Cultural Studies is inherently interdisciplinary and draws on Northeastern University's strength in faculty and industry alliances to provide an entry point for students to interrogate the relationship between media, representation, the public, and culture. Graduates have gone on to further advanced study, and have enhanced their credentials to establish themselves in a variety of fields, including teaching, production, publishing, writing, law, business, and consulting.

Small seminar classes, close faculty advising, and tailored course-loads make this a flexible program. Areas of specialization have included social uses of popular music, media industries, cultural policy, media and democracy, critical race theory, feminist and postcolonial theory, television studies, media history, critical pedagogy, and independent film and video production.

The program draws on the history, theoretical innovations, research methodologies, and critical practices of traditional and emerging forms of communication. As technology expands and shifts individuals' relationship with media culture, this program responds to the call for active citizenship in an increasingly global society.
