The First College of Computer and Information Science in the Nation

Northeastern University offers master's degree and certificate programs in health informatics through its College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) and Bouve College of Health Sciences in Boston, Massachusetts. These unique programs are a response to the critical shortage of professionals qualified to integrate technological solutions into health care systems. Students explore the technical, clinical, and business needs of healthcare organization in order to improve workflow and better meet patients' needs.

Northeastern offers one master's degree and 3 certificate programs. All these programs may be completed online or in a traditional classroom setting. These programs are designed to meet the high demand for health informatics professionals, as current estimates project that approximately 50,000 new jobs will need to be filled in this field in the coming years.

Master's Programs in Health Informatics

The master's degree program in health informatics at Northeastern University is designed for individuals with a background in either healthcare or information technology. Graduate students can choose from 3 different programs: a Master of Science (MS) in Health Informatics; an Advanced Standing MS in Health Informatics; and a sub-specialization program.

IT professionals with little knowledge of healthcare of healthcare professionals with little IT knowledge enter the 11 course MS in Health Informatics. Graduate students take introductory courses health informatics and health information systems as well as courses that integrate both content areas, such as Data Management in Health Care. Each student concludes with a capstone course, which is equivalent to a master's thesis. This program is generally completed within two-years.

Public health professionals, experienced clinicians, or individuals with PhDs in related fields can opt for the Advanced Standing MS in Health Informatics. Students in this program generally take 2 fewer courses, since their prior experiences typically eliminated the need to take courses such as the American Healthcare System.

Graduate Certificates in Health Informatics

Northeastern offers 8-month-5-course graduate certificates in 3 subfields that prepare students for specialized careers health informatics to meet the growing demand for these professionals in the marketplace.

The graduate certificate in health informatics management and exchange trains students to become specialists in health database design, interoperable standards, and data management.

The certificate in health informatics privacy and security allows students to develop an in-depth understanding of information security issues within the field of healthcare. Northeastern is positioned to provide particularly high-quality instruction in this field due to its status as a National Security Agency Center of Excellence for Information Security Education and Research.

The graduate certificate in health informatics software engineering is geared toward software engineers in healthcare organizations who would like to build their knowledge of health informatics and their understanding of interchange and interoperability standards. The program can be completed at a slower pace for working professionals.

All credits earned through certificate programs can be applied toward the master's degree in health informatics, if students choose to pursue further study.

Master's Degree and Certificate Programs in Health Informatics

The Health Informatics faculty members are leaders in their fields, with backgrounds in academia, industry, and government. They combine a strong knowledge of the field with practical expertise.

Gil Alterovitz is a National Institutes of Health, NLM Biomedical Informatics Fellow and a researcher at Harvard Medical School's Biomedical Cybernetics Laboratory where he develops methods to extract and optimize information in biomedical networks. Timothy Bickmore received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award to evaluate a virtual health-counseling agent.

Other faculty members hold leadership positions within healthcare organizations, including Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates and Atrius Health, Women's Health Institute, Partners HealthCare, and Massachusetts General Hospital and Massachusetts General Physicians Organization.

Interdisciplinary Study Supported by Two Prominent Schools

The programs in health informatics are joint ventures of the College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS) and the Bouve College of Health Sciences, giving students access to the ample resources of both prominent institutions.

CCIS was the first college in the country to be devoted entirely to the field. In addition to laboratories dedicated to research in health informatics related artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, and information retrieval and data mining, the college has 3 student laboratories with Linux, Solaris, and Windows XP workstations. The 7-story Behrakis Health Science Center is home to the Bouve College of Health Sciences. It houses state-of-the-art medical research laboratories and instructional labs in healthcare-related fields.
