Overview

The School of Architecture

The study of architecture finds a natural home in Northeastern's tradition of interdisciplinary study, experiential learning, and translational research. By its nature, architectural education integrates the liberal arts with professional training, and Northeastern graduates develop creative problem-solving skills alongside studio craftsmanship and technological aptitude.

Graduate study in the School of Architecture at Northeastern focuses on urban engagement. The university's curriculum links the cultural and physical history of Boston and its environs with rigorous scholarship. Research areas, including urban housing, energy systems and integrated design, the public approvals process, new building components, and market-driven buildings, are supplemented by learning to understand the global forces that shape cities: design, history, technology, commerce, and culture.

Northeastern's program is ranked 14th nationally in architectural research. By concentrating on the problem-solving aspect of architecture, the School also creates opportunities for collaboration with other academic units on campus, leading us to joint ventures with urban and regional planning, engineering, and computer science.

The Master of Architecture Degree

The Master of Architecture degree (MArch) is accredited by the National Architectural Accreditation Board and can be entered in multiple ways:

- as a one-year completion to the five-year Northeastern BS (with a major in architecture)

- as a two-year program, for students who have earned a BS in Architecture (or equivalent) from another institution

- as a one-year program, for students with a NAAB-accredited Bachelor of Architecture degree

Faculty members work closely with students on design studio work (in studios with no more than 12 students) and use a "case-study" approach to large-scale projects. Extensive relationships with public and private architectural entities allow students to critically address "real-world" issues within the context of a well-resourced, urban-focused university.
