Executive PhD in Business Curriculum

The Executive PhD in Business curriculum integrates advanced business science with practical experience.

This academically rigorous program has 4 components: core courses, concentration courses, an applied research practicum sequence, and dissertation work.

The Executive PhD program in business is designed to be completed in 3 years of study, but dissertation work may extend the completion of the program for some students.

Core and Concentration Courses

The core curriculum consists of 8 courses that cover micro- and macro-organizational issues, creativity, and innovation. Core courses also cover a broad range of research methods including qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods.

Concentration courses are designed to help the cohort address the organizational issues and concerns that they are facing in their current positions. These courses emphasize the use of research-based methods to understand and solve these critical issues.

Applied Research Practicum

Students in the Executive Business PhD program at Oklahoma State University participate in 3 applied research practicums that build upon the knowledge bases that they develop from their coursework.

The first practicum involves conducting simulated research that prepares students for actual research projects. In the remaining practicums, students work in groups to conduct applied research on topics that are of interest to them.

They work as teams to identify research issues, write research proposals, gather and analyze data, and complete research papers. They then present their research to Executive PhD faculty members and are encouraged to submit that research to conferences for presentation and journals for publication.

Dissertation Work

Students who pursue the executive doctoral degree in business at OSU also complete dissertations.

Although similar to dissertations in traditional doctoral programs, dissertations for the Executive PhD in Business program are generally more applied and interdisciplinary in nature.

Before beginning work on the dissertation, students develop prospectuses and complete and defend dissertation proposals. They work with faculty advisers and dissertation committees to complete their dissertations.

Residencies and Class Schedule

Students attend classes on campus for 3 days approximately once per month; one full day is devoted to each course. Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are devoted to classes and Wednesdays and Sundays are reserved for travel time.

Classes also meet 2 hours per week for at least 16 weeks during each semester via video or asynchronous discussions.

This convenient schedule makes it possible for students to continue with their careers while pursuing their PhD degrees on a full-time basis.
