Prairie View A&M University College of Business

The College of Business at Prairie View A&M University offers degree programs that meet the needs of students from diverse backgrounds. All of its programs are accredited by AACSB International, one of the most prestigious accrediting organizations for business programs in the world. Students gain the skills and experience needed to become successful leaders, managers, and entrepreneurs.

The college's graduate programs are designed for working adults; therefore, classes are offered on the weekends, in the evenings, and online. Programs emphasize communication, leadership, and teamwork; the interconnectedness of business and society; and global and ethical perspectives.

The Master of Business Administration Program

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program consists of 12 courses (36 hours) for students with recent Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degrees. Students who have received bachelor's degree in other fields are also encouraged to apply and may be required to take up to 7 additional courses (57 hours).

The program also offers concentrations in accounting, finance, and international business. Students with a concentration take an additional 3 to 4 additional courses (9 to 12 semester credit hours).

Students can take courses on campus in Houston ,or complete the MBA program entirely online, and they can complete the program at their own pace within a 6 year timeframe.

Executive MBA Program

The two-year Executive MBA program at Prairie View A&M University is created for managers and executives with at least 3 to 5 years of professional experience. This rigorous program provides theories and methods that students can immediately apply to their positions or businesses.

The program's curriculum consists of 12 courses including "Accounting for Executives," "Economics in the Global Environment," and "Executive Leadership." It also includes a capstone project and a study abroad excursion..

Two courses are offered each semester, and 8 weeks are devoted to each course. Classes are held at the Prairie View A&M University Northwest Houston Center on alternate Saturdays and online the other two Saturdays of the month. No GMAT or GRE is required for admission to this program.

Master of Science in Accounting

The Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) program prepares individuals for careers in private, public, and governmental accounting. The program is also designed to help students meet the requirements for the Uniform Certified Public Accounts licensing exam with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy.

The MSA curriculum consists of 10 courses (30 hours) including "Advanced Auditing," "Accounting Theories," "Law and Ethics for Accountants," and "Managerial Communication." Students without bachelor's degrees in accounting may also be required to take up to 6 additional courses (18 hours) to satisfy the degree requirements.

Classes are offered in the evenings or on Saturday at the Prairie View A&M University Northwest Houston Center.

Financial Assistance at Prairie View A&M University

Graduate students may qualify for federal loans as well as scholarships and graduate assistantships from Prairie View A&M University.

Admissions to Graduate Programs in Business

The admissions process includes completing an online application to Prairie View A&M University, a separate application to the PVAMU Graduate School and an application to the Graduate Programs in Business for the program to which they are applying. Prospective students for the MBA and MSA programs also must each submit 3 reference letters, all undergraduate transcripts, GMAT or GRE scores, and an essay discussing the reasons for pursuing an MBA or MSA and pay an application fee. Applications for admission are accepted for students entering in the fall, spring or summer semesters.

Executive MBA applicants must each submit 3 reference letters (including one letter certifying a minimum of 3 years of management/leadership experience), all undergraduate transcripts, a resume, and an essay discussing the reasons for pursuing an EMBA. EMBA applicants are also subject to interviews prior to admission. Applications for admission are accepted for students entering in the fall or spring semesters.

Student Life at Prairie View A&M University

Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) provides a wide variety of resources and services for students to help them achieve academic and professional success. A number of student development activities are available through the Office of Student Affairs and Institutional Advancement, including Career and Outreach Services, Student Counseling Services, Student Engagement, Veterans Affairs, Diagnostic Testing and Disabilities, Recreational Sports, Volunteer Services, International Affairs, and Special Programs. Students also have access to tutorial services, study abroad opportunities, professional mentors and advisers in their fields of study.

Students may also participate in a number of extracurricular activities that promote learning, provide networking opportunities, and strengthen professional skills. The College of Business is home to several organizations including Beta Gamma Sigma (an honors society), the PV Finance Club, as well as PVAMU chapters of the National Association of Black Accountants, the Association of IT Professionals, the American Marketing Association, and the Hispanic Business Students organization, to name a few.

Prairie View A&M University

Prairie View A&M University was founded in 1876 and is the second-oldest public institution of higher education in Texas. With an established reputation for producing engineers, business leaders, nurses, and educators, PVAMU offers baccalaureate degrees, master's degrees and doctoral degree programs through eight colleges and schools. The university recently named its College of Engineering in honor of PVAMU alumnus Roy G. Perry and the university's marching band, The Marching Storm, was featured as the lead band in the 2009 Rose Parade. A member of The Texas A&M University System, the university is dedicated to fulfilling its land-grant mission of achieving excellence in teaching, research, and service. During the university's 137-year history, nearly 60,000 academic degrees have been awarded.
