Overview

Robert Morris University Overview

A private university in Pittsburgh's suburban hills, Robert Morris University offers more than 20 graduate degree programs, including 10 master's programs available online. Founded in 1921, RMU built its reputation in the business fields of accounting, finance, marketing, and management. It has grown to include programs in communications, information systems, engineering, mathematics, science, education, social sciences, and nursing. The campus is set on a 230-acre former estate that is a short drive from Pittsburgh; it also offers M.B.A. and some other graduate programs at its downtown Pittsburgh location at the Heinz 57 Center. The city is an important corporate hub for financial and banking industries, health care, and industrial and high-tech engineering and manufacturing, providing a wide selection of employment opportunities as well as the cultural and commercial opportunities of a major city. Since 2011 the university has opened new, multimillion-dollar facilities for its School of Business and School of Communication and Information Systems, and construction is underway for a new School of Nursing and Health Sciences center.

Master's programs available either online or on campus include the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree program as well as the Master of Science (M.S.) degree programs in business education, competitive intelligence systems, engineering management, instructional leadership, Internet information systems, and organizational leadership. On-campus programs include Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree programs in literacy and special education and M.S. programs in information security and assurance, information systems management, IT project management, and taxation. M.S. degree programs in human resource management, nonprofit leadership, and nursing education are solely online.

Three doctoral programs are offered: the Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in information systems and communications degree program; the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in instructional management and leadership degree program; and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree program, offered for adult nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners, or adult psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioners, or as a completion of an existing master's degree.

Postbaccalaureate certification programs are also available for secondary and early childhood school teachers, and the university offers graduate certificates in instructional technology specialist, simulation leadership, professional enterprise systems, psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and teaching online, and autism spectrum disorders endorsement.

Facilities supporting the graduate programs at Robert Morris University include 9 open-access computer laboratories, 2 physical libraries, and an electronic library offering an array of research databases. Classrooms have been equipped with advanced computer and presentation technology equipment to facilitate teaching and learning. To support a large number of holdings, the library has a state-of-the-art searchable catalog system. The RMU Electronic Library offers continual off-campus access to more than 100 major research databases. The library is a member of numerous resource-sharing consortia that greatly extend the amount of materials available to support graduate education.

Graduate loans are available for those who qualify. Each student is encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Robert Morris University participates in the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program and also offers various interest-free payment plans, as well as third-party billing and corporate reimbursement programs.

RMU enrolls more than 1000 men and women in its graduate degree programs, from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, both in the United States and abroad.

The graduate programs admit students on a rolling admission basis. However, students are encouraged to submit all required materials at least 2 months prior to the start of their desired terms of entry. Applications can be filed for free through the university's web site. Students should note that the M.S. in nonprofit management degree program, the M.S. in nursing education degree program, the D.Sc. in information systems and communications degree program, the D.N.P. degree program, and the Ph.D. in instructional management and leadership degree program each require an interview as part of the final selection process.
