The College of Education at Rowan University

The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and was awarded the first Program of Distinction in Teacher Education by the New Jersey State Department of Higher Education. The primary mission of the College of Education is to ensure that graduate candidates, and undergraduate candidates develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to foster academic achievement, social responsibility, personal responsibility, and social justice in themselves so that they can, in turn, facilitate high achievement in P-16 learners.

Education Administration Programs

Education professionals who wish to move into managerial or administrative roles have several options depending on their career tracks.

The Doctor of Educational Leadership (EdD) degree is a terminal degree program for those seeking leadership positions in P-12, higher education, community college, or nurse educator settings.

The Supervisor Certification is for the person who already earned a master's degree and wants to meet the New Jersey state requirements to qualify as a supervisor in public schools.

An educator who possesses both a master's degree and the Supervisor Certification and wants to qualify as a principal in the public schools is eligible to pursue the Principal Preparation Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study. The certificate program meets the New Jersey state requirements.

The MA in School Administration meets the requirements established by the NJ Department of Education for state certification as a public school administrator in positions such as assistant superintendent, principal, assistant principal, and director.

The MA in Higher Education: Administrative Track is designed for those who aspire to careers in higher education administration or those who are already practicing administrators who want to upgrade their skills.

School Counseling Programs

The EdS in Educational Services and the MA in School Psychology combine to meet the requirements for New Jersey Department of Education certification in School Psychology. The MA in School Psychology is required for admission into the EdS in Educational Services program. Upon completion of these 2 programs, the student receives certification as a school psychologist

The MA in Counseling in Educational Settings prepares individuals for careers as school counselors in K-12 educational settings or for careers in student affairs working in higher education settings.

Special Education Programs

Teachers seeking certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities can choose from programs at the master's, graduate endorsement, or post baccalaureate levels.

The MA in Special Education is designed for those who have standard instructional certificates (CE) or CEAS and wish to pursue master's degrees in addition to the certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities.

The Teacher of Students with Disabilities: Graduate Endorsement includes the first 23 credits of the MA in Special Education and is ideal for students who need certifications in Teacher of Students with Disabilities and may be interested in pursuing the master's degrees at a later date.

Those who do not intend to pursue master's degrees or have certificates of eligibility (CE) only should consider the Teacher of Students with Disabilities Post Baccalaureate program. It is an undergraduate-level program that also leads to certification in Teacher of Students with Disabilities.

The MA in Learning Disabilities is an innovative program designed to provide motivated teachers with the knowledge and skills needed to meet the multitude of challenges found in both regular and special education classrooms.

Another option for those interested in helping students with learning disabilities is the Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) Certification. LDTCs work in collaboration with parents, teachers, and other school personnel to provide strategies to assist pupils struggling academically and to determine their eligibility for special services. The program meets the requirements for the LDTC certificate.

Instructional Education Programs

Professionals who have bachelor's degrees in other areas of study and want to become teachers can pursue initial New Jersey Teaching Certificates and master's degrees simultaneously. The Master of Science in Teaching degree program is a full-time program only and consists of 2 specializations, "Elementary Education" or "Subject Matter Education."

There are several graduate programs for current educators who want to advance their educations or credentials, but prefer to remain in the classroom, including the Master of Education, the MA in Reading Education, and the Bilingual/Bicultural Education Endorsement.

The MA in Higher Education: Instructional Track is for individuals who wish to pursue employment as instructors in developmental education programs or in selected science disciplines at 2-year or 4-year colleges.

Certificates of Graduate Study (COGS)

Teachers who wish to broaden their skills in the classroom but do not need full master's degree programs or state certifications can pursue Certificates of Graduate Study. The COGS are graduate level programs. COGS are available in "Autism Spectrum Disorders," "Educational Technology," "English as a Second Language," "Reading," "Reading/Writing/Literacy," "Special Education," and "Teaching and Learning."

Post Baccalaureate Programs

Post Baccalaureate programs are similar to the Certificates of Graduate Study in that they do not lead to degrees or state certifications. However, these programs are offered at the undergraduate level. Post Baccalaureate programs are available in "Subject Matter Art," "Subject Matter Music," or "Teacher of Reading."
