The College of Fine & Performing Arts

The College of Fine and Performing Arts fosters a dynamic and demanding, intellectual and creative environment that produces transcendent experiences of discovery and expression. The college nurtures learning and creative communities through programs that educate artists of the future and provides classroom and applied arts experiences for non-majors and enriching programs for the public.

The College of Fine & Performing Arts offers graduate studies in the area of music. The graduate music program centers on rigorous hands-on experiences to prepare the advancing artist for the professional world of the arts and/or advanced professional degrees in the arts. Rowan's music program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music.

Master of Music (MM)

The Master of Music provides intensive experiences in performance, conducting, or composition as well as courses geared to enhance the students' knowledge and understanding of the literature of their areas of specialization, and a greater understanding of music in general. The MM program at Rowan University is for the aspiring musician who wishes to make a career as a performer, conductor, or composer, or who will continue his or her studies at the PhD or DMA level. Graduates of Rowan's Master of Music program have gone on to major doctoral programs, orchestral careers, arts leadership positions, and careers as college professors and public school teachers.

Areas of Specialization include "Composition," "Guitar," "Jazz Studies," "Orchestral Instruments," "Keyboard: Piano/Organ," "Voice," "Orchestral Conducting," "Vocal Conducting," and "Wind Conducting."

Ample Performance Amenities

Rowan is a special place for music students. It is large enough to offer a wide variety of experiences and challenges, and small enough to provide students with a great deal of individual attention. In 2009, Rowan University joined the pantheon of great music schools with its designation as an All-Steinway School. The designation -- one shared by only about 100 colleges, universities, and conservatories around the world -- was bestowed just prior to the delivery of 11 Steinway grand pianos to the College of Fine and Performing Arts.

Rowan's Wilson Music Hall features an 895-seat concert hall with a 53-rank Wicks pipe organ, a 225 seat recital hall, choral and instrumental rehearsal halls, numerous classrooms, 80 practice rooms, and 40 studio offices. Special features include an electronic composition lab, a music library with stereophonic, and computer laboratories with numerous workstations for composition and other studies. The Music Library contains approximately 7,000 books and more than 6,000 recordings. The archives contain tapes of all faculty member, student, and ensemble performances since 1972. A studio within the Department of Music can record from all performance spaces in the music building and maintains an archive of student and faculty member performances.

Outstanding Faculty of Performers

The Department of Music's faculty includes highly respected performers as well as some of the east coast's busiest freelancers, recording artists, and noted scholars. The instrumental faculty is comprised of performers with careers as soloists and principal players with some of the region's most prestigious orchestras. Rowan students benefit from study with these academics and performers by gaining insight into what it takes to make it in music today.
