Overview

Southern California Institute of Architecture -- SCI-ARC

SCI-Arc is a center of innovation and one of the nation's few independent architecture schools, offering undergraduate and graduate programs. The Southern California Institute of Architecture is dedicated to educating architects who will imagine and shape the future.

Located in a quarter-mile long former freight depot in the Arts Distrct in the heart of Los Angeles, SCI-Arc is distinguished by the vibrant atmosphere of its studios, providing students with a uniquely inspiring environment in which to study Architecture.

An integral part of the emerging cultural hub of a city with a tradition of architectural experimentation, the school is devoted to finding radically new responses to the real needs and aspirations of today's world.

SCI-Arc offers students a unique experience as they pursue undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate degrees. The approximately 500 students and 80 faculty members of SCI-Arc -- most of whom are practicing architects -- work together in a fluid, non-hierarchical manner to re-think assumptions, create, explore and test the limits of architecture.

SCI-Arc examines everything about the built environment -- from design and materials to culture and experience.

SCI-Arc asks provocative questions to provoke new thinking and prompt new theoretical constructs.

The faculty members of SCI-Arc are international leaders in creating the future of architecture; SCI-Arc's students and faculty members come from throughout the world.

SCI-Arc invites the community to take its classes and ideas into the community; the school is a nonprofit cultural center that is woven into the fabric of Los Angeles.

SCI-Arc creates designs that change how people interact with each other and their environments. The school understands that the power to change lives is at its students' fingertips.

The Graduate Program

SCI-Arc's graduate studies foster the Institute's open-ended spirit of inquiry, responding to shifts in society, technology, and culture with a constantly-evolving learning environment. Faculty members and students work together to advance the next generation of the architectural discipline. The programs are led by a faculty of practitioners and scholars actively engaged in contemporary architectural discourse and production worldwide. The graduate curriculum is continuously and dynamically shaped in a manner only available to an institution entirely devoted to architecture.

The M.Arch 1 Program

SCI-Arc's M.Arch 1 is an NAAB Accredited, three-year, seven-term, professional Master of Architecture program, open to applicants who hold bachelor's degrees or their equivalents in any field of study. The core of the M.Arch 1 program is architectural experimentation and learning through making. The curriculum is horizontally integrated and vertically progressive, starting with a four-semester core sequence in which students develop a framework for the discipline of architecture, as well as a strong foundation for critical inquiry and experimentation.

By integrally linking each semester's design studio with courses in visual, cultural, and applied studies, students are offered an immediate instruction in the depth of the relationship between architecture and technological advances, representation, and social change. With each progressive semester increasing in sophistication, each student acquires the unique ability to address a breadth of complex architectural issues while testing his or her own intellectual and design convictions.

Upon completion of the core sequence, students are encouraged to pursue their vision, investigating design through the latest innovations in technology, advancing new praxes of design analysis and innovating through applied research with a choice of advanced studios and seminars. Students complete their studies with the presentation, in a public exhibition, of a thoroughly researched independent architectural thesis.

Throughout the M.Arch 1 program, particular emphasis is placed on the production of architecture, and the ways in which making produces a unique intelligence for the field. M.Arch 1 graduates are therefore prepared to further this intelligence through significant contributions in the profession.

SCI-Arc's faculty and are recognized leaders in the field, and include architects Eric Owen Moss, Ming Fung, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Tom Wiscombe, Andrew Zago, Elena Manferdini, Peter Testa, Marcelyn Gow, Marcelo Spina.
